        Hi all,
I am freaking out majorly and I need to know whether this is normal. My bun Beans is nearly 2 and just had his first calicivirus vaccination on Saturday. Now two days later he’s got a large bald spot forming at the side of injection and Beans is biting at the area making it look red and angry. I will try posting a pic.

Is this normal or is he having a reaction? My vet is closed so I can not call her.

Beans seems to be eating and drinking as normal as far as I can tell. The only difference in behaviour is that he is running around alot more and he has pooped a substantial amount of (regular) poops outside his litter box which is out of character.

Please someone tell me if this is normal, I am going absolutely sick with worry.

        Thank you

Definitely call the vet on this when they open…it is good that he is eating and pooping (even if it’s outside the litter box).

Some do get a reaction at the needle site unfortunately. This was one my bunny had several years ago.

His thankfully healed up on its own. I’d definitely report this to your vet and show them your photo.

It’s sometimes referred to as “cylap burn”. It helps reduce chances of this happening if the site is massaged well immediately after the vaccine is given.

Hope your boy heals up soon.

This happened here in Perth recently with some batches of the vaccine. Health wise Beans should be fine but will need treatment for the ulceration. There may be other patches around his neck and abdomen. One of our rescues had small sores all over her back neck and tummy from the reaction.

My Bam got a reaction like that from either the myxo or the calici vaccine, he was given both at the same time, it was before the new double vaccine came to Sweden. The vet agreed it must’ve been a reaction to either vaccine. I washed his sores with saline and put on terracortril + polymyxine B-cream. It took 3 weeks to heal.

Thank you everyone for your replies – your posts have given me some relief.

I visited the vet first thing this morning, he has confirmed it is a reaction to the calicivirus vaccine, and Beans biting on it has caused it to become infected.

He is now on topical antibiotics and we’re going back to the vet on Thursday to check the progress.. Hoping Beany pulls through and makes a full recovery!

                      That’s good. : )
Hopefully he can’t reach to lick the med off! What is the topical med called?

The vet has given me Opticin which he says is usually used as an antibiotic for eyes but should would fine on this wound so I am hoping he’s right!

I’ve put a sock bodysuit on Beans to make sure he can’t lick off his meds. I’ve made sure it is not tight on him and he has full mobility while wearing it (although he hates it, it seems to be working well!).
