My bunny was spayed today at around 10:00 AM. When I picked her up at 5:30 PM the vet tech said she was doing really well and had eaten. I don’t know. Because for me she isn’t really eating much. Only if I hand feed her is she eating and she isn’t eating with gusto. And there is only one lonely little poop (normal looking) in her carrier which I am keeping her in right now. I’m really worried – beside myself with worry – so upset that I did this. I wish I left her alone.

She will need to be in for several days. If she was only operated on this morning she will just want quiet and rest and its the best thing for her. Constant checking and handling will stress her out. Do you have any oral syringes ? You could give her some critical care or pellet sludge, even some puree apple or steamed mashed pumpkin.
Did the vet give you any meds for pain management and gut motility or did they give a slow release dose ?

You can also offer some fresh herbs like parsley, sweet basil and coriander.

I would actually take her out of the carrier – that is probably not the best place for her – let her in her regular area where she is familiar with.

Ooo, good spot Sarita, I didn’t realise she was still in the carrier. Yes, an xpen on a single level, a nice snuggy box with a blanket. Just make sure there is nothing she can jump up onto.

Most important of all Marianne you need to take a deep breath. It is very normal for her to be quiet and not interested in eating yet. Most buns will only eat a tiny amount the same day. Make sure she has lots of fresh water. Moist greens will help get her hydrated.

So happy – after about 32 hours post surgery (and 3-5 measly little poops) she is finally pooping and the poops even look normal. I gave her her metacam this morning but that still didn’t fix things. She was grumpy – wouldn’t let us syringe feed her, wouldn’t eat the pellet smoothie at all, flinging everything around the cage – dumped her pellet bowl in the water bowl and flung the veggies everywhere, and tried to stomp the syringe every time we tried to give her liquid. It wasn’t until around 5 this afternoon that she finally started letting me give her pedialyte, She ate her arugula, but what seemed to really jump start her appetite were the rasberries, she ate 3 and then another 3 and after that went for some hay and lots of veggies. Then at around 7 PM I find a bunch of poops in the cage and she is also looking and acting much much happier. I’m so relieved. Im still going to keep a close eye tonight and keep going with the pedialyte; she likes it. I moved her to her intermediate pen, as her home is 2 stories. I’m so relieved right now.

This isn’t unusual. Anesthesia can cause a disruption in their normal functions, so you will often see fewer and smaller poops following surgery. Glad she is pooping now and you have her somewhere she is comfortable.

I’m glad your buns seems to be on the mend. Spaying is a major surgery and it can take them some time to be back to normal.
