Okay, I have a bit of a technical question here. I get abot 1% of pills on the floor 99% in litter box. Often times I will just pick them up with my hands. My question, does bunny poop contain E-Coli, or any serious bacteria, that could potentially make a human ill? I mean, YES, I try to wash my hands right after picking them up, but, I have been wondering this for a while, because, if yes, then I will stop just using my hands altogether, and grab a paper towel or something. Thanks.

I don’t believe they do contain anything that awful since they don’t eat meat…or maybe I’m way off base. It would just gross me out not to have a kleenex…and I’ve handled LOTS and LOTS of animal messes from many species. If you’re washing after, I’m sure it’s fine. The problem is all in my head ha ha But maybe someone else knows of some other horrible thing I’m missing.

I do not believe so either….I usually just use my hands as well for Bobby’s poops but of course, I wash my hands afterwards. To me it’s just easier to pick up the fecal pellets with my hand and dump them in a near by houseplant. Bobby’s fecal pellets are pretty small but I’ve done it with other rabbits as well.

Others in my house pick them up with their hands and it doesn’t bother me when they do it, but I cannot bring myself to pick them up without using a paper towel or tissue even though I know they are mainly undigested hay. I’m not grossed out by bunny poop at all, and no problem as long as I have my paper towel. I can kick them with my foot though!

Unless the poops are from a bunny with a coccidia infection, I wouldn’t worry about picking them up with your hands if you’re already ok with it. Even with coccidia (normally mushy/runny poop anyway), the biggest concern is passing it on to another young bunny in your home.

Love it, thanks. Once in a wile I pick up a “fresh” one. I guess that’s the best way to describe. Kind of slippery wet, now, that’s gross. Bobby, that’s funny. Got my first bunny when I was a 2-3 yo boy. Loved them ever since. “Bobby,” was it’s name, and he/she came in our house during a blizzard in Iowa, and litter trained itself. Never went outside again as far as I remember. I’m 56 in July lol

All animals have bacteria in their intestines, but not all bacteria is bad. Rabbit poop is pretty safe because they are strictly herbivores. You can compost it or put it in your vegetable garden, no problems. So touching it isn’t a big deal. I mean, I still wash my hands afterward. But I’m not paranoid about it. Dog or cat poop, on the other hand, can be pretty nasty. You’re not supposed to compost it and I wouldn’t touch it with my bare hands.

I’ve been picking up bunny poop with my hands for many years. I do wash my hands afterwards. My husband will sometimes use his hands, but he also has this little dust pan with a brush that I got at a dollar store.

I have a designated poop broom with a stand up dust pan as my stray poop cleaner upper. I do occasionally touch poos if they roll into a tough spot & then I wash my hands. I really can’t see rabbit poop having harmful bacteria but I would still wash your hands to be safe.

Gotta love those stand up dustpans. $1.00 at dollar store.
