Hi everyone this is my first post! So lovely to meet youall!

I have two buns, a 9 month netherland dwarf (Dusty) and a 3 year old lop Simba.

Now Dusty suffered from stasis (ahh!) 2 weeks ago today, i rushed her to the vet where they sorted her out over a couple of days, she came home happy and healthy and seemed totally fine. I was told by my vet to cut down on the pellets to encourage a lot more hay eating, which i did. They now get a handful of burgess excell pellets and a scoop of pro-fibre pellets that i got on amazon twice a day, in the morning and at about 6pm. They used to share a large rabbit bowl of food each twice a day, so it is considerably less. But she eats hay all day also, and i give them some greens too.

So she was fine, she seemed better than ever going crazy with binkies and loveliness… Until the start of this week – I noticed her nipping at Simba when i reached into the food cupboard, and over the week it became more than nipping – she outright attacks poor simba when she knows im getting them food. They circle and circle around. He is really gentle big boy and gets annoyed – he’s had a wee thump of the feet at her today in protest! Once the food is in the cage, and in their tummies, they are best bun pals again.

Another thing ive noticed is she has gone back to her old habit of trying to pull my carpet up when they get their run around time out of their pen in the evening. This is something she stopped doing after I had her spayed (in January). She just seems to be in a very bad mood, its as though shes back to before she was fixed. She was also very territorial around food and her pen before she was spayed and also after spay, until i got her bonded with Simba a couple of months ago – Simba was my angel and bonding them made her turn back into her sweet wee self.

Another thing – ive heard a couple of teeth crunches from her every now and then like she did when she was unwell. She is eating like a pig and pooping perfectly and has been all week. I have caught her humping simba sometimes also – maybe this is a bonding issue and shes decided she is the boss (Simba was the boss when i eventually got them bonded i think – he used to be VERY humpy, as in constant pretty much, though he is also neutered – but this was only a week before i adopted him this february)

I dont want to starve them – maybe she is just grumpy and hungry – but i also dont want to risk stasis again by overfeeding them pellets and not enough hay

Any suggestions will be greeted with much appreciation!!! Please help!!

I think you should look at Dusty as if she was a little kid – if you take her off her regular amount of pellets which are the equal of a treat and she is used to getting a big bowl of it, well…it’s like telling your kid “OK, you can’t have a box of Snickers bars every day anymore. But guess what, you can have all the whole grain crackers you want!” . Sure, she will attack Simba, because now she sees him as another mouth that eats HER pellets, and she will be grumpy and naughty, but it will pass, she’ll get used to it. Meanwhile, a good cure against grumpiness and naughty behavior is time out. I’ve heard that some even cover the cage with a cloth during a time out, but I think that’s a bit over the top.
I also down scaled the pellets, and Gustav wasn’t pleased, but he wasn’t getting as much pellets anyway, but don’t worry – you are not starving them and they are not hungry, as long as you provide them with plenty of hay and leafy greens.
Pellets do contain quite a large protein percentage…I’ve also seen on the Howcast series that you should only give a small handful (the smallest measuring cup) of pellets once a day. Do they have separate cages? If so, you could try to feed them separately…..
