We have a large rabbit who is around 6yrs, but we just adopted him about 2 weeks ago. He is wonderfully litter trained in that he will only pee in a litter box (which I am very thankful for), but we take him out to play every day and he will leave little droppings here and there AROUND the litter box we have set up in a corner for while he’s out…he uses it to pee and some poop, but then he’ll binky around for a bit and then poop next to the box randomly…it’s only in that small corner of the room so he’s not scattering them everywhere….maybe I should start sitting over there when he’s out playing to “reclaim it” so to speak? Any thoughts? My husband wants to know if he’ll do this forever

        Thanks in advance!

I don’t know if he’ll do it forever, maybe he’ll stop when he gets more accustomed to living with you. I think what he does is marking his territory. (I assume he’s neutered). I have two bunnies that don’t get along, so I’ve a gate separating the living-room from the rest of the apt, one bunny in each space, and one of the buns put territorial droppings along the gate. Other than that, he only goes in his litter-box. It happens when both bunnies are at the gate at the same time, so I think it’s pretty clear that it’s territorial.

Edit: I see now that you’ve already concluded it’s territorial =) Well, it may go away if you don’t have any other bunnies when he learns to trust you better.

I am relatively new to rabbits, but have done a ton of research on the subject. Here are just a few thoughts to consider

            1. Is the litter box big enough. Large rabbit plus a small triangle litter box some people use for rabbits, nope, most rabbits wont use it for poops from what I have read. Maybe it gets to dirty around it? My rabbit loves having like 3 poop corners in her litter so she loves the room.
            2. Its an older bun (6 years), are you sure he can hop in the litter box at all? Many people say older buns need a small slit by which to climb in and out because they are past the hopping in days.
            3. Territorial marking. Is he/she neutered? Probably too late now but it helps if he is. Otherwise may go away in time? Do you have any other pets that she could be smelling/
            4. You could try reducing his space. My rabbit started with a very small space for the first week or so (like a 2v4) and had limited free roam time. This allowed her to get more used to it I think.
            5.Could just be happy poops?
