This morning, my bun wasn’t eating at all, not even the fresh kale he looks forward to every day. I immediately brought him out of his enclosure and massaged his belly. After observing him, I noticed he was drinking plenty of water but still not eating. I gave him a very small dose of simethicone, and after about a half hour he was back to eating as normal. He’s been munching on kale, romaine and lots of hay since then, but he won’t touch his pellets. I recently bought a new bag of pellets (I’ve always fed him Kaytee Alfalfa Free Timothy Pellets), and I’m wondering if the pellets are spoiled and that’s what caused his upset tummy? The bag says it’s good until October, but can anyone advise me on how to tell if the food is fresh? Also, if he’s happily eating, am I out of the water, or should I still be concerned about GI Stasis?

        Thanks!

Do the pellets look and smell the same as always to you? Rabbits probably have a better sense of smell than we do, so even if the pellets smell fine to you, there may be something off about them to your rabbit. If you think it could be the pellets, you could try another bag of them, making sure to get a bag with a different lot number or expiration date.

He may have had a little touch of gas, so either the simethicone or some time going by alleviated that. If he is eating and pooping normally, then he is probably okay. Closely monitor his intake and output to make sure that all is well.
