I have been regularly cleaning my rabbit’s ears with q-tips, water, and mineral oil. Only recently did I realize that Thumper has quite a build-up of ear wax deep inside his ear canal. I found this after shining a flashlight in his ear when I noticed he seemed to be scratching his ears and shaking his head often. I’ve been massaging the base of his ears in hopes to relieve his irritation, but it’s not helping that much. I’m trying to find out if there is a safe way to get rid of this ear wax. Any help is very much appreciated. Thank you.

Yep, a trip to the vet is the safest way. Get it checked out to make sure there isn’t something causing the extra wax and then get the vet to show you the best way to deal with it as part of regular grooming.

It could be that cleaning with the Q-tips has pushed wax further down and caused an impaction. I would have the vet remove the wax, your bun may need to be sedated.

My vet recommends not cleaning the ears at all. The more wax you remove, the more wax the ear will produce to protect itself. Also, with cleaning is the danger of introducing bacteria.

            Is your bunny a lop?
