A few minutes ago, I was in the rabbits play area. I am a very new owner and have yet to familiarize myself with all of her noises. She ( Riven 6 mon – 1 year old unspayed) was making a slight wheezing sound. I couldn’t hear it very well and tried to pick her up to hear better and of course she didn’t like it. I deemed that in this case it was necessary and went against her will of me to put her down. She freaked out but wasn’t doing the noise anymore. Then she thumped at me!? She has never done this before. Is this something I should be worried about? Is this a sign of aggression?  Keep in mind it was very obvious she thumped at me. She thumped once I put her down then moved a little closer to me and thumped again.

She probably just thumped because you annoyed her. Thumps can be for many reasons, it depends on the situation. Are you going to get her spayed?

I would say Riven viewed you picking her up as aggression on your part and she thumped to let you know! LOL! Bunnies don’t like being picked up. If you hear the noise again, maybe get down on her level and listen. She may even come over to check you out and see what on earth you’re doing.

Could the wheezing noise be honking? Bunnies honk when they are excited.

Consider why rabbits thump in nature. Rabbits thump in nature as a warning to their warren. When they are scared, threatened, or worried they thump so all the other bunnies know to hide or run.

Obviously you didn’t scare her really bad or she wouldn’t have come closer to you to thump. She still trust you not to eat her. She was however feeling upset and like prey when you picked her up, so she thumped out of displeasure and stress.

I’d say Sarita and Eepster are right.

There are bunnies that will thump in happy anticipation of food or during play-time, but this seems like disgruntled thumping. There is also a “very scared”-thumping that may happen in response to f ex sounds or scents (probably) that people can’t even hear/sense. Since she moved closer to you, not further away from you, it seems to me that she was making a point.

Rabbits have a lot of personality =)
