Been noticing Migi sneezing once or twice a day lately… Hope it isn’t a concern but I’m assuming it’s from hay dust. I just recently reached the bottom of the bag and almost noticed my switch to Oxbow came with really small cuts and lots of tiny tiny pieces. Is this normal for Oxbow? Migi eats both Kaytee and seems to munch on some Oxbow, but she picks out whatever ones she wants from both brands. Problem is I thought Oxbow was a better brand, but I also noticed that inside the bag I can see that there are a lot of tiny pieces/dust.

Anyway. Could the small pieces be causing the sneezing? I know it isn’t much but I’m still worried . If so, is there a better brand I could buy with less dust?

It could be caused by dust. Is there any discharge around the nose?

I use Oxbow and the very bottom of the bag, I always throw out (a terrible waste, considering the price) because it’s so dusty. Some bags are worse than others. I usually find the Orchard Grass is less dusty.

I’ve tried feeding her Orchard but she didn’t touch it at all so I went back to Timothy. This is a new bag of Oxbow and there’s so much itty bitty pieces she could be inhaling ]:

I too find Orchard hay, and also the Botanical hay, to be less dusty. It can vary from bag-to-bag, sometimes I give the handful a little shake into the bag before I pull it out.

As it is a natural product that isn’t really processed, the hay can vary a lot. I haven’t yet found a perfect brand that’s good every time. Start taking a good look at each bag of hay before you buy one. You can usually spot the ones that are short strands with lots of little bits, vs the ones with long strands and not lots of dust and bits.
