Hello All! So it has been about 7 weeks since Suzee has been Fixed about a week ago we ran out of hay, went to the store and Bought some “Gold Timothy Hay”. Since i filled her hay holder up and a few days past i notcied that she hasnt been eating hay nearly at all! so i went and bought a differnet type (Western Timothy Hay) filled it up and same thing. She has picked up an old terrible Habbit of chewing the carpet, unfortunately i live in an Apartment so I KNOW i am goign to have to replace it when my lease is up (chunks of carpet as wide and a food dish GONE!. Does anyone have any tips/Ideas or knowledge to why she is doing this? I assume the is chewing on the carpet because teeth are always growing but why sint she eating the hay we give her? Would love to hear some Feedback THANKS!

She is just pulling the carpet because she thinks it’s fun and it entertains her. Alot of rabbits find this entertaining.

Why isn’t she eating the hay? This is a very common problem with rabbits as well – what is the rest of her diet?

Also Western Timothy and the Gold Timothy are the same hays – the Gold Timothy is just a 2nd cut of timothy hay.

Maybe you should try some orchard grass, meadow grass or oat hay. Many rabbits prefer orchard grass since it is a sweeter hay. Is the original hay that she was eating before you ran out no longer available?

Is she getting a good variety of greens every day? I hope that she is just pulling up the carpet and not ingesting it. A lot of rabbits do like to pull up carpet, as Sarita said. Do you have anything else for her to play with or chew on? Old phone books, paper towel tubes (with no visible glue), or cardboad boxes might be something else to interest her.

we have her eating the Sun seed Adult Rabbti Formula which she seems to love becuase its always gone by the end of the day. I give her a Romaine lettuce leaf when i get home and go to bed, and then of course little yogurt treats when we are playing with her, Only as a reward though.

I bet she does! This is actually what would be called “junk food” for rabbits, all these colored bits and pieces of dried fruit shouldn’t be in there. If you look at the ingredients list, there is stuff listed that is undesirable like soybean, corn and so on. It’s kind of like feeding a child candy for meals, they would love that, too. What you want is a plain Timothy based pellet, a lot of people feed Oxbow Essentials, it’s a good quality food. How much are you feeding her? She might just be filling up on her candy all day and snub the hay. They should get 1/4 to 1/2 cup pellets per 6 lbs of body weight.

Also, the yoghurt treats are bad for her, rabbits can’t digest dairy and it can upset their stomach. Try craisins as treats, rabbit love them and they are a healthy option in moderation. Ours gets one a day, at the most.

If you change her food (and the amount if it’s too high right now), she might just get hungry enough to give that “nasty” hay another try.
