Hello! I am new to using forums so bare with me here!
My dwarf, Fritz had to have his eye flushed for a possible blockage of a tear duct & has to have Erythromycin eye ointment put in his eye 2x a day. (I mostly manage to get it around his eye :/) My other bunny, Penelope performs her wifely duties & cleans his eye up after. The vet told me to keep them separated for around 20 mins after putting the ointment in his eye bc of this, but I’m not sure that’s enough time. I tried wiping the excess with a damp cloth. I’m just afraid she’s ingesting unnecessary antibiotic. Do you think it will be harmful to her??

Erythromycin is listed on MediRabbit as being dangerous due to the potential for diarrhea. I would worry, even if she is only ingesting a little. Can you get something else from the vet? I find ointments really annoying because you have to smear it on their eye. I’ve always asked the vet for eye drops because I can easily sneak those in, plus it is less likely to end up on the fur around the eye where it can be licked.

Thank you. I put a call into our vet. She was off today but will be returning my call tomorrow to see what can be done. As for tonight…. I will keep them separated for as long as possible, maybe overnight, after I put the ointment in his eye. I just feel awful keeping them apart!

Thank you. I put a call into our vet but she was off today. She will be returning my call tomorrow to see if I can get drops instead. As for tonight, maybe I should separate them for the night. I just would hate to keep them apart from each other. Breaks my heart.
