Okay so theo has a cage with wire flooring and I did not know at the time of getting the rabbit that wire flooring was bad!! I found out and have been placing newspaper on the bottom of the floor for over a year and theo has never had any problems till now! He’s got sore hocks and I have been trying to sell the cage but once it sells I don’t know what to get in place of it!! I was thinking about building a C&C cage but we are moving and theo is going to be in the basement! I’m just not sure if I can put his cage on the ground! Do you think that’s okay?? And the basement is not damp or wet at all! It is not finished so it has cement floors but I would lay some fleece down and he’s potty trained! The other option is we have a white table and this was the original plan but we were going to get one of the big cages with the plastic flooring bucket thing don’t really know what it’s called but we were going to buy one of those and put it on the white table but I want to have something easy to move since my parents are getting divorced I need something easy to move to switch back and forth between houses!! And I am going to start bringing their outside so I was thinking about buying a X-pen and let it be his cage and then move it outside whenever I took him outside!! Okay that’s all haha thanks! Sorry for switching around so much!!

Wow that is a very nice cage! It is a little bit over my price range though! How big is the play pen and can you detach it from the cage?? I also was looking at the reviews and it said that the latch on the door does not work to well is that true?

The cage cost me about $75.00, I caught it on sale.  Both sets of the ex pens detach.  The black one is smaller and comes with the pen, can attach and detach easily.  The larger white expen I made work just fine, and it is a little harder to attach and remove as you have to bend the loops a bit and then squeeze them back with pliers (not too hard).  But i plan on using it sometimes outside as well so it is duel use.  The latches hold fine for me, they are just swing down latches, i’ve had no problems with anything on the cage.  There are two identical cages, on smaller for “guinea pigs” and one larger for rabbits (obviously more expensive).  I bought the guinea pig one and with the ex pen up at all times it’s been a perfect size.  I just leave it open always into the ex pen area.  Nugget is very happy that way.  I just added a litter box in the ex pen.

I think you’re going to want something more than fleece on a concrete floor. Did Theo go to the vet for his hocks or did you catch them quickly? I’ve typically had my rabbits on a carpet with linoleum over that. I’m amazed at all the people who just put their rabbits directly on their good carpeting. But then I’ve seen someone say even carpeting isn’t enough to prevent sore hocks. Huh? Well, everyone has different experiences, I guess, but some day I may look into the memory foam covered w/ fleece that was suggested. Sounds expensive but comfy.

I’m so sorry to hear about your parents splitting up. That’s really sad. I know what a comfort pets can be during difficult times.

Are you switching cages because of the sore hocks? Can you just put more padding on that floor?
Just throwing out ideas. I had trouble following your posting, but I’m kinda tired, too.

Okay yes!! When I lay down the fleece I was planning on laying memory foam! Our local grocerie store has squares for $2 each and I caught his sore hocks quickly called the vet the day I noticed them! (Since I usually put him on his back everyday to check his teeth and feet) she told me to put peroxide on them and then some neosporin they have been getting a lot better!! but I am switching the cage because of the sore hocks and I can not lay down more greets of newspaper because I keep running out!! and if I lay fleece all over the cage he sometimes go’s outside of the litter box and I have no way of washing it! In you’re opinion though do you think it’s okay to put him on the floor of the basement? It’s a really good tempature down there so I don’t think that will be a problem!!

Oh god lulu’s picture in your avatar is so cute I’m literally dying!!

If you can’t afford a cage with a xpen attached to it you can just get a larger excercise pen.

I have two medium sized xpens joined together to form a larger one

Well, I’m not paying any vet bills if I’m wrong LOL, but when my buns have been in the basement, there was burber carpet (not a soft carpet) and we don’t think there was padding under that, though I bet you could get carpet padding cheap. Then I had plastic on the carpet, topped with cheap carpets from wherever I could find them. I’m guessing the memory foam and fleece would be fine. Especially for such a lightweight as yours appears to be. I think it will all be fine. Awesome about the improving hocks

Okay thanks so much!! I’m really happy his sore hocks are getting better ecspecially so I don’t have to pay that big vet bill but do you think it’s okay to put his cage on the ground?

Oh sorry. You did ask that. I’ve always had my rabbits on the ground even in the basement. It was a finished basement, enclosed, not drafty. I’m guessing yours will be the same?

I think an x-pen would be perfect for going back and forth between two places. They fold up nice and when you set them up you can choose the shape so it’s good for pretty much any space!

The basement is unfinished but I don’t think it’s drafty do you think that it Is still okay? And I think I’m going to get a x-pen it seems like the best option

Sounds fine to me! I’m sure there are lots of people who would not put their buns in a basement, but seriously, you have to do the best you can with what you have to work with and I think that basement sounds better than what a lot of buns ever have. You’ll find time to spend with her and get her out and about. Again, I’m sure some would disagree with me, but I’ve had to house a wide variety of pets in my basement and they were fine.
