Is it okay to use hay as the flooring in the enclosure and for the toilet? Or will this confuse the rabbit?

I would not use anything for the flooring – you don’t need any “bedding” or hay. Just use hay in the litter box.

            Really??

I’ve pretty much got a hutch like the below but higher from the ground and it has a metal tray as the bottom which comes in and out..

Because I dont want her just on the metal tray, what can I line the cage with then?

Where should I use the hay/straw? In her little and bedding only or ?

It is best to not have anything on the “floor” while litter training because it causes confusion about where the toilet is. That is why litter and hay should only be in the litter box. You could line the cage with fleece if you wanted to give some traction. Once litter trained, most rabbits do fine on a “soft” surface like fleece or short pile carpet.

If you want something edible, you can also try a tightly woven grass mat. They feel more like textured flooring than bedding/litter.

It sounds like we have the same rabbit house. I have a litter box “downstairs” and in his bedroom (the upstairs part with the sliding drawer) I put a cushion and a small fleece dog blanket. Winston seems to like it and doesn’t use his bedroom as a toilet (there has been the odd occasion but no wee!)
