        Hello everyone!

I have wanted a pet rabbit for the longest time. However, I knew that it was not an easy pet, and therefore spent months on research to make sure that I was 100% ready and prepared. So on Friday (three days ago) I adopted a 4 month old hotot mix from the Humane Society.

Upon bringing him home, I had an x-pen, hidey house, litter box, toys, chews, lots of hay, and a water dish for him. The pen is made of NIC storage cubes and zip ties, and is 57″ by 28.5″ by 28.5″ tall.

First day was a rough. He is a very curious, energetic bunny. And I have discovered that he is pretty territorial, and can be a little aggressive despite being neutered. (However, he was neutered less than a week before adoption and I have read that it takes up to a month before their hormones settle down). He wouldn’t even let me clean his cage without playing tug-of-war with the little poop scooper and giving little exaggerated kicks as he hops away huffily as he urinates in his box but has yet to learn to stop “marking his territory” all over the floor of his pen. He seems to have a lot of mood swings which I’m sure is normal “teenager” bunny behavior, and at times he is sweet and comfortable, accepts treats and (tolerates) a few pats, and flops down in his cage to nap (as he is doing in my profile photo) and at other times he is very aggressive, moody, and bites. I have a pretty ugly bite on my finger resulting from one of those mood swings.

Is there anything I can do to help him improve his mood and help him become less agressive? I have tried almost everything. I try to show him that he is a submissive, I give him plenty of play time, and give him treats to bribe him into letting me give him a pat or two (carefully of course, after making sure that he sees my hand paused next to his face before a light petting). Nothing seems to work and he just seems distant and territorial and moody. I know they take a while to warm up and form a bond and get used to the new home, and also a while for his teen hormones to settle, so is this just one of those things I have to wait out? Or is there anything I can do to help him enjoy his life in his new home more?

        Thanks!

LOL – sounds like a feisty one. Do not clean his cage when he is in the cage.

I would say number one rule give him more time to settle in – it can take awhile for a rabbit to feel “at home”.
