So, I have horses, and noticed the bag says safe for bunnies as well. They are pine pellets I believe but I am getting mixed answers on whether they are good for bunnies. Some vets say yes and some say no. I have been using the paper pulp bedding, but it is so expensive. But a bag of horse bedding would be more convenient and cheaper and last much longer. My bunny is litter trained so he would make direct contact. Are they safe for bunnies?

That’s what I use and it’s perfectly fine.

I would recommend it in a litter box but for the rest of the bedding i would say fleece

We have vets who say no to anything pine, and I can’t find any hardwood pellets around here so I buy aspen pelleted litter online and use Carefresh along with it. Expensive, yes, but I have to follow my vet’s advice.

Okay, I am rereading your post and you do not need to put bedding in your rabbits cage – just a litter box.

JR I thought you switched! Sorry I’m sticking w/ my pine pellets. They’re heavy and bulky to work with , but I’ve used it for quite some time. Fingers crossed for no issues :/

Pine pellets are okay. It’s pine shavings that are harmful.

So i just talked to my bunny vet, also emergency vet, and she said pine pellets are bad too, because when they absorb, they become powder like so they are dusty then. And if you open the bag and smell the pine, then so will the bunny. I will be sticking with aspen or my paper pulp bedding. It may be a little more expensive, but I would rather keep my bun safe. Thanks for your advice and maybe this will help some of you too!

I’ve never had any problems with the pine pellets and yes there is some smell but the phenols are removed in the process and the phenols are the problem.

I’ve used pine pellets for a long time, and they don’t become dusty in my experience. Even if only slightly wet, all they do is expand and break down but they’re moist enough not to get dusty. There is a pine smell when you open the bag, but that alone isn’t bad for rabbits. What’s harmful to them are phenols which are present in pine shavings, but are removed during the processing of pine pellets.
