        Hi,
So we are moving and Theo is going in the basement! We are going to build a 10 by 10 play pen for him to let him get out since the basement is not finished. The problem is is that there is only one window which is on the whole other side of the room!! The house is brand new and is just in our budget so we have to cut down so I can’t Leave the lights on for him so he is probably going to have to stay in the dark for most of they day since I can only get him out 2-3 hours a day! Do you think it’s okay if he’s down there in the dark for that long we really don’t have anywhere else to take him and I don’t take him outside! The other thing is it kind of smells do you think that it will bother him or cause any health issues? And if you could do you have any tips for making you’re rabbit more comfortable after a move and in a basement since for his whole life he has always lived in a sunroom??
        Thank you so much!
        Anne

I’m really sorry, but going from living in a sunroom (assumed to be main hime level?) to a constantly dark smelly unfinished basement sounds like he will have a lonely sad life after the move. Is there any way he can be upstairs with the family, maybe in a bedroom or other living area?

If you have fluorescent lighting it really should not be too expensive to keep it on. Does it just smell new? Maybe you can plug in a small radio?

Could that be his night time space, would you be able to have a daytime pen upstairs for him?

I can’t leave the lights on! but next to the window in the basement I’m pretty sure we r moving his cage over there so he can be in the sun! And then we have a sunroom upstairs so I’m going to let him run around 15-30 minutes a day and then his play pen will be lighted by the lights in the basement I can’t bring him up stair for sure! :/

Why can’t you bring him upstairs? Even moving his cage near a window, it sounds like a lonely, sad environment for a bun.

Can’t think of anything that should really smell in a brand new basement except the pine boards…? Sounds like he’s going to have a nice big enclosure to move around in and will enjoy any and all time you can give him to come upstairs. maybe you’ll even have a safe area outside during the nice weather to give him more time out, though, of course, you have to be really careful about that in many ways. In time, you may be able to work various ideas out to help him along. Congrats on the new house. You must be really excited!

Sounds nice. My rabbits have been known to figure out how to get out of our fence but never seem to go far. So weird! Now we’ve moved and have a screened porch
