Hey guys. We recently had our Dutch (dexter) neutered about a month ago. We are now beginning to re-introduce lola the mini lop. We let them meet and they spent a car journey together and a couple of days together (in separate cages) before moving lola to my mum’s until dexter was neutered. Now it’s been a month after the operation and we are beginning to bond them again. We let them out for about 20 mins (and then gradually increas). However, during this time he constantly tries to mount her. Yes He’s not rough or nasty. No biting or aggressive behavior. I want to be able to have them stay together. How do I make dexter understand that this is wrong and have him stop the mounting?

        Thanks

        Ross

Some mounting is to be expected and it’s important for them to establish who is in charge.

Let him mount for a few moments, and then take him off, you want to allow him to show dominance but you don’t want it to be too excessive. If the mounting starts to annoy her, take him off, but for a bit it’s fine.

I’m starting to think Pumpkin may never stop mounting Shamrock! But it really is ok–let go as long as a) he’s not mounting her head and/or b) she’s not showing signs of being fed up which could lead to a fight.

If neither is showing any signs of aggression, it sounds like it’s going well!!

I have started putting them in the bath together and they lie with each other and relax. their cages are next to each other and they will constantly be with each other. It’s only when I let them out in “dexters room” where he starts mounting. Neither are aggressive though.

You will want to completely “neutralize” whatever living space they will be in together permanently before they “move in” together. If that’s Dexter’s space, he will continue to mount and be territorial if you don’t.

We flip-flopped living spaces (Shamrock in Pumpkin’s condo, Pumpkin in Shamrock’s room) just prior to them being together in pen full time. The day they moved in together (in Pumpkin’s condo); we cleaned the carpets, washed the blankets, cleaned the water dish, and gave them a brand new litter box. This really helped!
