A while back I did extensive research on eastern cottontails, and I’m always looking for more information so that I can better understand my little Pete (even if he doesn’t understand him!)  This is just a link to one of the seemingly-accurate pages that I had found on them in general.  I’ve seen lots of conflicting data on how fast or how high they can jump.. and also on whether or not females tend to be larger or not… but that’s going to be the same no matter the species in question.

If anyone is interested in learning more about cottontails, here is the link:

And an excerpt about the babies:

“Their eyes open in about a week. In two weeks they begin taking tentative excursions from the nest and, at about this same time, their large ears begin to raise themselves up from a flattened position.”

When we found my little Pete after the nest was destroyed, his ears were still not up, but came up gradually over the first week… His eyes were open, but some of his siblings never did fully open their eyes… I remember how tiny he was and constantly being afraid we’d lose him.  Every day that he’s with us is a little blessing.. even when he decides to run into furniture or people at 30 mph! lol

Agree, really interesting! I’d have liked to see courtship like that!

It’s sad that so few survive their first year. I guess it’s the same with wild rabbits here.
