I’ve had Lionel for a while now, and have been expecting him to sexually mature as he’s over a year old to confirm that Lionel isn’t actually Lioness. I wish I could properly sex him, but he is SO fussy when I try to clip his nails, let alone expose his belly or lay him on his back. I’ve tried so many times and failed, which brings me to the point. Is there any other way to deduce a rabbit’s gender besides looking at their genitalia? I’m almost going to give in and just bring him to an exotic vet to get checked. He’s over a year and isn’t doing anything male rabbits usually do, there are no testicles, and ‘he’ is starting to get a little chub under his chin which is what usually females get, but I’ve heard some males can get it too. Thoughts?

The only way to absolutely sex a rabbit is to check the genitals – no other way. Why would you not give in and take him in to be sexed and also talk about neuter or spay with the vet at that time as well…

I’m just not sure if my dad would be up for it; he doesn’t really see rabbits as cats or dogs that need regular vet check-ups.

Get him to look at some of the forums threads on care and diet, not to mention the bits on the main pages. Suggest to him that it is important and you would appreciate him going with you to hear what the vet has to say on the subject. You really do need to get Lionel in for a check to see if maybe Lionel is a Leonie…

That is really the only way. I don’t know about Lionel, but the lionhead girls we caught were so fluffy around the belly, they were harder to sex than Mordecai. We thought they were girls but weren’t sure until a vet confirmed it.

You are correct that a dewlap usually signifies a female rabbit, and then the absence of testicles is also suspicious. If he is in fact a she, it is so, so important that you get her into the vet to have this confirmed and speak with them about spaying. Females are at great risk of developing cancer at a young age if this isn’t done.
