New poster here…I’ve been stalking for information and have finally decided to join in the conversation.  I have two buns.  Finnick (that we were told was a boy, but turns out to be a girl) and Peeta (that we were also told was a boy and turned out to be a girl).

Finnick is a year old and Peeta is only about 3 months old.  I decided to get Finnick neutered about a month after getting Peeta when they started humping each other and circling (I had no trouble bonding them).  I called a couple of bun vets to get quotes and was shocked by the variance of pricing.  The highest was about $465 for the neuter and the lowest was $72.  Is this normal?  Have other people run into this too?  What did you pay for your spay/neuter.  I imagine there will be some difference based on locale, but does anyone have thoughts on this?

I also ran into the same issue with pricing. I ended up calling our local bunny rescue for their suggestions. The prices I got were anywhere from $375-525. They all required bloodwork and said that the price is because they are so small. I found my vet through the rescue and paid $140 for the Dobby’s spay and Marley is scheduled next week. My vet is fabulous!

Prices will vary widely, especially in different cities and different parts of the country. My vet charges $125 for a neuter and $150 for a spay.

It’s common for prices to vary. My regular vet charges $325-395 for a neuter – spay which is actually on the lower end of cost in my city. Another rabbit savvy vet a town over charges $50 for a neuter and $80 for a spay.

I live in a small town and my vet charged me $45 to neuter my bunny and he charges $75 for spaying. I’m not sure, but I believe that vets in smaller towns have a harder time getting business than a vet in a big city would, and so they have to charge less.

When I was calling vets in my area to check the price of a rabbit spay, the prices varied wildly. One vet even told me they recommended against fixing rabbits, since “most rabbits die during spay/neuter procedures” (What?! I knew that wasn’t true at the time, but I was shocked that a vet was telling me that).

On the high end, one vet said $500. One said $375. A few said $250. I ended up going to a low cost Spay/Neuter clinic that has a rabbit savvy vet – it was $95 including pain meds and the antibiotic shot and all. They did a great job – recovery was swift and Liebchen never seemed in much pain.

I think the most important part will be to do your research and make sure the vet you pick is truly rabbit-savvy. Savikins–that is terrifying that a vet told you that!

I’m not sure about prices to get a rabbit spayed. But I called 4 different exotic vets (3 over an hour away + 1 10 min from my house) and they ranged between $170-$325. I wish there was a $75 one near me! I ended up going with the vet 10 min from my house.   I  paid over all about $290 for his neuter. That included the actual surgery, blood draws to check kidney, liver, function ect, and 2 stool samples because his liver enzymes were elevated slightly.  We did the regular scalpel surgery. If we would have chosen laser it would have been $45 more.

I live in FLorida, I just went through our local humane society they charged $40/each I got both of my babies done at the same time. They have a low cost spay/neuter program.

I live in Washington, DC, and paid about $400 for my girl’s spay, but this included the surgery, related blood draws, medications, two nights in the animal hospital getting post-spay care/monitoring (standard for this vet’s practice), and a follow-up visit a week after surgery. I chose this vet because I was very nervous about the spay (my doe is a holland lop and was only 2.5lbs at the time of spay), they had a great focus on pain-management, and I thought it was a good idea to have professionals monitoring 24/7 afterwards.

Mordecai got a crypt orchid neuter which costs the same as a spay at his vet. A normal neuter costs 200 which includes the surgery, one night at the hospital, and all included meds. A spay costs 320 which includes the surgery, two nights at the hospital, and all included meds. I think it really varies from area and vet to vet however. This vet was/is my avian vet even before I got Mordecai, so I trusted them with Mordecai. In my area at least, it’s not easy to find good exotic vets, so driving out a little farther is worth it.

gingerg — $400 is a really good price for that, especially for DC/NOVA! I’m not too far from you and the vet we go to now charges that just for the spay!

All of mine were spayed/neutered at a different vet and I got good discounts (they called in multi-pet discount but I think it was more like a frequent flyer discount!).

Pete got a discount on his neuter (about 50%) because his vet considered him a wildlife-rescue; so he cost us about $170 after everything; blood-work, nails, pain meds, physical and tooth-check.

Tilly got a discount on her anesthesia for surgery, but cost us around $250 after everything was said and done.

I do have to agree that more than pricing, it’s best to find which one you’re most comfortable with and seems the most rabbit-savvy. Ask lots of questions! A good vet won’t mind the interrogation when it comes to protecting your bunnys health.

@cottontail — Agreed. Ask tons of questions DramaQueen. I used most of the questions on this list from the House Rabbit Society: http://rabbit.org/faq-spaying-and-neutering/ (scroll down to “what kinds of questions should I ask the vet?”) My vet wasn’t offended at all, and I got the very comforting news that my vet had never lost a rabbit in a spay, and that the biggest issue with surgery she’s had has been rabbits that are very small, because they don’t tolerate the anesthesia very well. Based on her advice, I waited until my girl was just over a kilogram before having the surgery.

@JR — Based in what I’d read, I was ready to hear anything up to $500, so I didn’t feel offended when the receptionist quoted the price to me, and I felt even better when she explained everything that was included. I had my boy neutered at the same time, so I was looking at a very high combined bill. Of course, I’d already been in for well bunny visits, boarding, and a case of the sniffles, so perhaps I’m getting some kind of bulk discount.
