I’ve read that a lot of protein can cause bunny poop to have a darker appearance. I feed my bunny Purina Fibre3 and Kaytee All Natural Timothy Hay. Both products say nothing about being high in protein so I’m kind of stumped. They normal poop pellets, just… dark. Any ideas BB?

Are you feeding any greens? Whenever mine have dark poops it’s usually in response to me getting carried away and feeding too many greens and/or trying out a new green. I lay back on the greens for a couple days, forcing them to eat more hay and poop usually gets back to normal in a hurry.

I’m not. She’s only two months old and I think at six months is when I should start introducing greens. At her previous home, I was told she ate romaine lettuce and a bunch of carrots which kind of worried me… It’s been almost 4 days since she left that home and on the diet I’m giving her which is just hay and pellets. I literally give her only like 15-20 of the Purine Fibre3 pellets in the morning at 10am and again at night at 9pm. Just yesterday she started eating more and more hay, which is what I wanted her to do. Her poop is still dark!

At two months she really should be getting unlimited pellets and unlimited hay. It can take a little time for her system to adjust to the new diet. It sounds like the pellets and hay you’re using are fine though. If you’re concerned about the protein, you could mix some good quality timothy based pellets in with your pellets, but I’m guessing its just the change in diet. The romaine she was eating won’t hurt her, but the carrots weren’t the best thing for her with all their sugar.

As long as she’s eating her pellets and plenty of hay, and her poops are normal size and consistency (you can even break one open — should be primarily undigested hay) — then give it a while longer for her system to adjust to the diet change.

                Okay sounds good.

Yeah the first thing I did when I noticed that all her poop was dark was squeezed it open and it is undigested hay, so that’s a relief. She’s probably around 2 lbs, so should I not be worried about feeding her a little more pellets? I believe I saw some certain measurements per weight of bunny or should I just keep it to a very minimum? When I gave her around 30-40 pellets this morning, she pooped out her first cecotrope that I noticed. It came out in singles or doubles (stinky too haha). She really is eating a lot of hay now which is great relief. Just not sure about how much of the pellets to feed her.

                Thanks, btw

Baby buns should get unlimited pellets–I’m not sure to what age though. It might say in the diet/care section of the site.

Is she drinking enough? Sometimes it’s due to dehydration.

If I give her too many pellets, she really has 0 interest in the hay. Today I tried giving her a small handful in the morning then after she ate some hay, so after she pooped it all out I gave her another small handful of pellets and just repeat. Maybe she needs a visit to the vet?

She’s been finishing her water bowl twice a day along with some sips from the water bottle, so I think she’s pretty hydrated… Plus it isn’t hot at the moment.
