I’m worried about stressing out the lionhead too much, but he needs some grooming. I’ve noticed he has at least one mat in his fur and he might have more. So I have two questions:

        1. What’s the best way to deal with the mat(s)?

        2. What’s a good way to check him for fleas or other bugs? The vet said mites would look like white flecks, and I don’t really see anything like that, but he could still have other bugs. (His fur is all black by the way).

I deal with Bindi’s mats with a pocket-sized pair of pet clippers. I would wait a little while until he’s more settled in since this may stress him out.

As for checking for mites, you could use a flashlight and a comb and look for any bald patches, dandruff, redness or scratches. These could all be signs of mites of fleas.
