I am planning to acquire two younger Holland Lops for my home, and wanted some input from experienced rabbit owners. I’m looking at 5’x5′ 8-panel dog pens (want something sturdier than NICs), and am wondering if a pen height 24″ is appropriate for these smaller breeds, or if 32″ (or more) is necessary. This will be my first rabbit experience, so I’m trying to learn as much as I can before I bring them home

It is usually suggested that the minimum height for an x-pen is 36″. Smaller rabbits that are good jumpers could jump over a 24″ pen.

Depends on how ambitious they are. LOL
Leopold can be contained with a 12″ fence of NIC panels. He’s too lazy to even attempt jumping over it. The fence is just to corral off an area where I can keep food and such out of reach. Now, a more nimble and ambitious bunny could very easily clear twice that height. So if you’re looking at exercise pens as a permanent housing setup, then taller is going to be better. As tobyluv stated, 36″ is good. But you could also put a “roof” on it by clipping a sheet covering the top if you can’t find one quite that tall.

I would definitely not go shorter than 36″ and would even seriously consider 42″. I have 48″ for my 2 holland lops. Remember that any type of hidey house or cardboard box can end up at t be side of the pen and be used as a platform or step….
