Bugs was very territorial when I first got him in September 2014 (he was about 6 months old) and he would leave his droppings everywhere. I got him fixed in November and he still will not use the litterbox like a trained pet. He knows how to use it and he knows that he has to, he uses it all the time. But he STILL poops all over the floor. I have tried cleaning the spots with things like vinegar or rubbing alcohol but it doesn’t help at all. I have tried picking it up immediately and waiting and everything in between but he still won’t totally use his litterbox. Every time he goes in his litterbox I pet him and/or give him a treat. I yell and clap my hands when he poops on the floor but it doesn’t work. I’ve heard of using spray bottles like cat owners use but I just don’t see that working. I am desperate for advice!

I wouldn’t use any punishment in litter training-spraying or clapping etc. What you were doing is good-cleaning well, often. As long as he’s peeing in the box and doing most of his poops-that’s litter trained!

There will always be stray poops! Pumpkin has been spayed for months and will still leave 10-20 poops here and there to make a point!

It’s literally everywhere though, he poops on the floor more than in his litterbox. And sometimes he gets upset when I clean it, like he’ll jump in his litterbox to block me from putting his poop in there. And when I pick it up with a paper towel he will rip the paper towel out of my hand and growl.

To clarify: I understand it will never be perfect, I’m not expecting him to be clean at all! But it’s more out of his litterbox than in it and I feel like that’s not normal. He has the exact same habits as before I got him fixed.

What is your litterbox like? Is it big enough for him to lay down in? Do you put fresh hay on top of the litter?

Try to make the litterbox as pleasant a place as possible. A place he will want to spend more time.

Yes this I’d make sure it’s nice and roomy (we got a medium size 12×16) cat litter box. Plenty of room for Pepper to move about. Another thought..have you tried different bedding in it? Maybe he doesn’t like the litter or bedding you’re using? We use Aspen bedding in Pepper’s litter box. We also put the hay at the front, so he can eat his hay and poop at the same time LOL!

We seem to have the opposite problem. He always poops in the litter box but we have at least 1-2 pee accidents outside of the box. I’m hoping getting him fixed will help a little with that. When he pees we wipe it up with a paper towel then rip it up and put it in his litter box.

The big box with hay is 12×16 and Bugs is pretty small, like he could lay down and stretch in it. I don’t know the size of the smaller one but he fits in it great and uses it all the time (the little paper towel is pieces I cleaned his pee up with.) I know they are super dirty/full right now but I’m changing them tomorrow as I do regularly. No matter the state of his litterbox he still uses them the same amount. And I put hay on the litterbox every day so it’s always fresh. He knows very well what the litterboxes are for and that he is supposed to use them, but he is VERY territorial. Like I said he will jump in the litterbox to block me from putting his poop in it. If I have a friend or two over he will run around the living room and poop all over until they are gone. He is seriously crazy lol I wish they made bunny diapers!! I need a bunny nanny.

I can’t get the picture to post but he has two litterboxes. I used to have them in two separate spots but now they are next to each other. His litter habits didn’t change at all with the location of them. They were in both spots for long term periods.
