today i saw some red urine in the corner of daisy’s cage. then it happened two more times. after the first time i had come on here and searched it, scared it was blood, but a lot of people said no, and based on the descriptions, it didn’t seem likely. but i’m really worried. she’s acting normal, her poop looks normal, and shes eating the same as always.

        1. what is this? what’s happening?

        2. should i take her to the vet? we’re going to ny on tuesday (daisy isn’t coming, sadly) so i dont know when the earliest i can take her would be

oh and daisy is 1 1/2 years old, and not yet spayed. the urine is deep red-ish, but there doesn’t appear to be any blood ‘swirling around’ in her urine like some people described when their rabbit bled.

Rabbit urine can often be a orange-red color so it could just be her normal pee. I kinda had a scare with Bun Bun too recently when he did a little pee on the stairs which he usually doesn’t. Can you take a picture?

sorry about the bad quality. this is basically the color. it dried a little and browned a little, but that’s about it.

I can’t really tell from the picture, but from what you are describing, it seems like normal coloured urine. The give-away is usually the consistency throughout the urine, if it is a consistent colour, it is usually not blood. I will look at your piccie shortly on my computer.
The one thing I will mention is that it would be in her best interest to get her spayed ASAP. Since she is a little bit older, she is prone to reproductive cancers, and a spay is an easy way to prevent these.

Strangely, this has been coming up a lot on this forum lately. I posted in this other thread about using peroxide to test for blood.

                https://binkybunny.com/FORUM/tabid/54/aft/136698/afnp/418973/Default.aspx

It’s probably too late now, but you can do a simple home test on stains to see if they are blood. Pour some hydrogen peroxide on it and see if it reacts. If it’s blood, it will foam, get warm, and disappear. Peroxide doesn’t react with plain urine. It does react with some other substances, such as yeast if you want to see what the reaction is like.

thanks guys. there doesn’t seem to be any red urine today. i’m very happy about that, just in case. thanks for the tip, eepster. if it happens again, i will definitely test it out.

Eepster, I never considered doing that with the peroxide! I’ll keep that in mind if it becomes necessary!

Hamster, glad to hear everything seems back to normal!

Pepper’s urine is dark orange/red. I read that if they eat veggies with beta carotene in it, it can change the color of the urine. Pepper normally eats some spinach or spinach mix, and a baby carrot everyday, both which contain beta Carotene

My bun’s urine is an orange-red color. It’s been that way from shortly after I got her at 8 weeks. She eats spinach, mixed into a prepackaged lettuce/baby spinach mix. Then she’ll usually eat some baby carrots (1-3 per day). And her meds are mixed into Blueberry and pear and (sometimes) Carrot baby food. I’m not sure if that has anything to do with it.

okay imreally worried now. I just did the peroxide test, and it foamed. I’m waiting to see if anything else will happen, but I’m pretty sure that means it’s blood, right? I’m going to call my vet and try to get an apt. what do you guys think? I’m trying to keep Daisy away from the peroxide, and she’s acting normal, so I don’t know what to do. help??

If you’re worried I would call the vet and ask them their opinion… I’m not sure if she’s acting any differently or if she has had anything different in her diet today vs a week ago? Although the peroxide thing is an interesting test, I would be hesitant to use it as my only diagnostic. Hydrogen peroxide reacts with catalase, which is found in blood; but also in many other things such as potatoes. In some cases they check for it for possible early detection of UTI in people, but not sure about with bunnies… My best advise is to contact your vet, let them know what’s going on and what your concerns are.

Sending lots of good vibes to you and your bunny!

okay I’ve scheduled a vet exam for Monday (not as soon as I’d like, but it’s the soonest they had.) im crossing my fingers.

I think the peroxide might sometimes react to certain things (like catalase) but not necessarily mean blood. Either way, I’m sending you and your bun tons of ((((Vibes))))

thanks moxie. I’d like to take her in anyways, just in case. hopefully it won’t be anything too serious.
however, I suspect that Daisy hasn’t eaten anything since yesterday. today I gave her some romaine, which she usually devours, but she just ran up, sniffed it, and then ran away. also, just visually, the amount of pellets in her dish hasn’t decreased since yesterday’s dinner. she may have picked at it, but nothing more. how can I get her to eat, at least until we go to the vets on Monday?

I hope the vet visit went well.

The peroxide thing is more useful to confirm that it’s not blood than that it is. As I mentioned, it reacts to yeast too. It reacts to a number of things. That said, even though it doesn’t prove blood, since it means there is something other than just urine in the urine, a reaction warrants investigation.

daisy’s vet visit was very successful. im so happy. they said she was fine, but said to watch her, for fear that a bladder stone might form if my dad keeps feeding her pita bread behind my back. (ive told him to quit it so many times! now he has to listen because the vet said so haha) however, daisy did get a little traumatized by the car ride and the vet constantly squeezing on her bladder to try and get her to pee. (the appt was on Wednesday and daisy is still a little traumatized, but at least shes eating and moving around.) daisy kicked the vet in the face, however, which was not too great. (kind of funny thinking back on it now, though. don’t worry; the vet didnt get hurt). however, daisy loved the nurse. she became such a cuddlebug. other than that, i’d say it went pretty well. they also gave her a quick nail clipping, and then sent us on our way. so overall, it was pretty good. thank you guys for all of your help! daisy is going to be spayed soon, as well, so hopefully that’ll go fine. again, thanks guys!
