So I’ve had chuey, the new bunny, for 3 days now. I’ve been letting him out for most of the day and he seems to enjoy it. He binky’s everywhere. And he seems to have learned that he can ricochet off the dog and it’s the best time ever. If Im sitting on the floor, he’ll come up to me and lick me, and he allowed me to touch him today. The only problem is getting him back in his room (he stays in the bunny proofed bathroom). I usually have to chase him around which I know cannot be good in building trust. Also I once had to throw a blanket over him and scoop him up that way. He’s really fast and it takes so much effort to herd him back into the bathroom. I want him to enjoy being out but the time it takes to put him back makes me second guess it. Do you guys have any tips on how to get him to go back without stressing him out so much?

Try treats…definitely don’t chase because the more you chase the more he’ll run away.

I always make sure to save my bunnies’ feeding times for when they need to go back in their cage. So they always associate cage = food! Usually all I have to do is shake the bag with the kale in it and they beat me to their cage, LOL.

Until your bunny learns the routine and learns that food = snacks, I’d make sure to always give yourself plenty of time to get him put away. Then I’d just quietly follow him and try to guide him into his cage. Try to stay at least a few feet away from him, and don’t move too fast or make loud noises.

if you have room, i’d lay in the room and let him come to you and give him a treat, head rubs and then slowly work your way out, patrick caught on to this pretty quick and it was war after that. I did the chase thing for awhile and it became a game for awhile, treats work as well as food, I get a handful of hay and he comes tearing across the floor.

The critters are wise to our techniques, so you may want to change it up, once I used a spray bottle, he didn’t like it but I was in a hurry.

Oscar has learned that he gets a craisin for going in his cage. Now, when we try to give him a random treat during the day, he will actually hop in the cage and then we try to talk him into coming back out since we actually weren’t trying to put him up. Treats definitely work, sometimes too well…

                  One word: Food.

Mine get their dinner pellets at bedtime. They are practically begging to go to bed.

I taught my girls to go home when we call them and tell them to “scoot their boot/go home” or “go to bed” (at night, obviously)by giving them a treat or pellets (since they’re pellet free, they go crazy when they get them as treats). They don’t get a treat all the time ( with four, I’d be going broke with treats alone), but often enough that they still respond. If you’re bun is up for treat-training eventually, this works amazingly because it’s a stress free way to round up the warren when they absolutely can’t stay out.

I keep pellets in an empty mayo jar and shake it when it’s time for Pumpkin to go home. She comes running from whatever she’s doing and hops around her condo looking for her food!
