I have become the “bunny lady” to everyone I know. So I often end up with some cute bunny things on Facebook. One that has come across many times, usually with a comment of “you need one!”, is pictures of a German Giant rabbit. Its usually an old man holding a massive bunny. So today I was looking them up online. The hubs and I of course dream of having a big bunny someday. But I was just wondering if anyone else knew much about them?

BM — you may not research Giant German rabbits until after 1/15/16. Say no to the giant bunny!!!

But no, its a FUTURE goal. Our herd needs to thin out a lot.

Krisangel – that’s awesome! The websites I was reading said the German and Continental/European giants came from the Flemish blood line. we have one bun who has some Flemish in her. She’s the biggest bun, but she is nowhere near what a full Flemmie would be. But, she is our sweetest bun.

Artemis is now 16 lbs but only her momma was full flemish so im not sure how much bigger she will get. But there is no doubt they are the most docile breed ive ever had

That picture of that rabbit and that man has been going around forever hasn’t it! He’s a cool rabbit. I imagine these big buns are bred for nefarious reasons which may be why we rarely hear of anyone or ever hear of anyone having one for a pet.

I’ve met a few Flemmies though that are pretty darn large and in charge. And I’ve had a pretty large New Zealand White as well.

I kind of like having my little Netherland Dwarf rabbit though…which is funny because I always thought the large rabbits were so cool, but Bobby is so full of personality and pretty easy maintenance – except for the dental trims and the constant need for pets (but hey I’m lucky he wants to be petted).

I imagine you’re right Sarita. Without a doubt, we would have to get one direct from a breeder. I’m sure they rarely show up in shelters. Our bunnies are pretty normal in size. I think it would be neat to have a big one.

Don’t worry JR, LBJ…..!!! It won’t be anytime soon!!! Lol

The pic with the man in the green jacket and blue hat always freaks me out — the man looks EXACTLY like my old boss who died back in 2006.

I read a few years ago that particular photo with the man holding the bun, is from a breeding operation. They bred these super huge bunnies to send to poorer countries as a cheap food source.

Hmm. I can believe it. I certainly don’t want people starving though, even if that means they eat a bunny.

Sorry BM, but there are other food sources IMO. No eating bunnies. Eat fish, chicken, beef, go veggie, etc., but no bunnies.

I know, JR, and that works fine here in America. But if they are sending these bunnies to impoverished countries it makes sense. They multiply quickly, they’re small so they wouldn’t take up much space. When all you have to eat is dirt and termites, a bunny could be a blessing. But here, we’re accustomed to them as pets. So it would definitely be hard/undesirable to eat them.

I also hope to have a big bunny someday. They are beautiful!
