Fluffy usually has this little crust in the corners of her eyes which I usually just clean off. I know this can be caused by dental problems specifically overgrown roots- when the teeth cause pressure on the tear ducts right? Fluffy does have cheek teeth spurs which she’s going to go to the vet tomorrow to have filed…. I’m really sure she probably does have overgrown roots as well and im wondering what would be done in this case? With overgrown roots is it the same treatment- having them filed down periodically? I am just wondering whether x-rays would be worth it if they are just going to show overgrown roots which need filing anyway. I am trying to save the money for x-rays instead to go towards treatment for her chronic urinary issues (which I really don’t think is a neurological issue, I think its a stump pyometra).

There are surgical treatments for overgrown roots, which is something people sometimes opt for if the problem is really bad. As for the eye crusties, those are normal in all bunnies. Just like people, they will get little eye boogers. LOL If they are occasional and dry when you find them, they may have nothing to do with a tooth problem. I would be more concerned if there was a more continuous discharge that runs down from the eye.

You sound like you’re being very, very smart about this. Some people just HAVE to know what the problem is, which can be OK as long as the animal isn’t put through unnecessary trauma.
Stump pyo? Yikes Hope you get that one figured out

I don’t think it will show “overgrown roots” with just an regular x-ray however I wonder whether x-rays are going to show symptoms of stump pyrometra either – have you consulted with the vet?

Usually it’s more a case that the teeth are being pushed through the bone though so possibly this can show through an x-ray as well.

What a head x-ray can show is possible infection in the gums though…if your vet is good at looking at x-rays – my vet usually has a radiologist look further and they can detect more usually than the vet.

And if you feel like the cause of her incontinence is pyrometra stump have you asked the vets what can be done to help or cure this? Is it something that can be done without an x-ray – you mentioned before that you had x-rays done and the vet wasn’t able to determine anything the first time…

The other vet that she usually sees says stump pyometra would show up on an ultrasound. This is the vet that spayed her and she was trying to convince us that Fluffy doesn’t have stump pyometra because she would be running a fever (personally, I think shes biased b/c she did the spay & wouldn’t want us to think any complications happened). Im going to ask the more experienced vet at the same clinic who is going to do her dental trim tomorrow about how we can diagnose this… hopefully its not too expensive although if he says ultrasound too then im pretty sure its gonna be really costly.

This is why I was making the decision to leave out the head x-rays (and possibly risk a tooth infection being left untreated) and instead use that towards diagnostic tests for her urinary issues. It’s just so hard when your bunny has two problems at the same time and live in the city where vets charge 2x the amount…plus Fluffy looks so miserable Please send vibes that her appt goes well tomorrow and they’re able to do something about her urine issues once and for all!

Sarita- I might’ve forgot to add that her body x-rays were done at a totally DIFFERENT clinc … the only thing they found from those was that she might have spinal cord disease (causing urinary problems, but again I strongly suspect stump pyometra) and that there was a little faded dot near her uterus area – which gives me more reason to believe its stump pyometra
