Hi everyone. I don’t post much here, but I still get mostly all of my advice from this place. I didn’t really find a thread about this topic though..

My husband and I are expecting our first child in April. We’re getting pretty close to baby time, and I’m starting to worry about how my very, very, VERY spoiled 2 year old, unaltered male rabbit will adjust to no longer being the baby. He pretty much has full, unrestricted reign of the entire house (except the bathroom and master bedroom, because the floors are slippery lol). He is basically our dog! He is very affectionate with us, and makes friends easily with human guests. He has only been around one child, a friend’s daughter who was 2 at the time, and he was very friendly to her, even after she patted his butt a little too enthusiastically.

Another concern is that he’s a very tiny jersey wooley.. He was the runt of the litter on top of being a dwarf. He weighs two pounds. Does anyone have any experience with newborns and rabbits? Is he going to be a brat and hate the baby? Is he too small to be around the baby? Will he need to be confined to one room?

        I appreciate your input!

Little Puffy Tail is the newest mom I know of who posts on here fairly regularly. I LOVE Jersey Wooleys. I hope Stink isn’t his name!?
Sorry. I don’t know what to think, though, so hope someone gives you hope of happy baby/rabbit bonding. If he’s that good with people, I would hope he’d be happy with baby.

We have a few moms here who became super moms-with both bunnies and babies. They shoudl be along to help

But I would say do what they advise with other pets-start carrying a doll, start playing baby noises, start disrupting routines now-get them used to it. It’s no time for them to adjust while your sleep deprived and stressed. So get them ready now in any way you can

Talk to other moms, pet owners, your doc, your vet

Thanks for the advice! Stink is one of his many nicknames. His full official name is Stinkland Prescott Gambol, but his friends call him Stinky, Stink, or Baby Bunny

The doll idea is very interesting! Might have to try that one!

I’m going to admit straight up that I’m one of those very practical people, especially when it comes to babies and pets. Some may not appreciate my attitude or advice in relation to this topic, but on the chance it may work for you, why not share…..

You have your pet bunny who has a life in your home – don’t change it or restrict him when you bring bubs home. I understand that he may get a little less attention, that will happen, but try and keep his routine normal and I doubt he will notice much difference. If your sitting with the baby and your bun comes up for a sticky beak or a sniff, let him. Show him the baby and don’t let feel bad for being interested – basically, include him. Once he works out what the baby is (good grief! Lol!) and knows it’s here to stay, just like him, he’ll learn to accept him/her like he does you. Any crying may come as a surprise, but he’ll get used to it. Bunny’s get used to all sorts of things, especially sounds. And if your bun doesn’t like something, he will take himself away – give him that opportunity to leave if he doesn’t like what is going on around him.
And as far as bubs in concerned, she/he will grow with him just like an older sibling, or someone/thing that is a constant in their lives.

When I bought my baby bun home, he was introduced to our dog’s within hours and are now all free roam 24/7. It’s nothing to see our bunny laying next to one of the dog’s, and we all live together as one big family. If we can do it with 3 dog’s, I’m sure an itty bitty baby will be a breeze – nothing to worry about as long as you include your bun. Sadly I have heard of new parents making the mistake of keeping their pets at a distant and wonder why they play up…. sigh!
Let us know when you have the baby, and how it goes for you….. Cheers.

First of all, congrats on your upcoming baby! Do you know if it’s a boy or girl?

I have a 4 month old daughter and 2 very spoiled house rabbits. My bunnies have their own room but are in separate condos because I can’t bond them due to my very rabbit-aggressive female. One of my biggest concerns about bringing a new baby into the house was how it was going to affect my buns. They have always been my babies. They come out in the a.m. and p.m. for separate run times.

At first, the noise of the newborn baby was a bit stressful to my buns. They were used to a very quiet house. With lots of love and reassurance from me and my husband, they were fine and eventually got used to it. I suggest you set up an area for your bunny where he can retreat to for peace and quiet when he so chooses.

As for making time for your bunny, you just have to make it work. I admit, especially at first it was hard because a newborn is so much work and I had not a second to myself but I made it work. My husband and I took shifts with the baby and so I still had time to spend with my buns when they were out for play time. It’s not going to be easy, but if you love your bunny, you will make it work. My biggest pet peeve is people who give up their pets because they are having a baby.

From day one, my buns were allowed to smell and see the baby. I didn’t hide her away from the buns. I put her on the floor and they came over and sniffed and nudged her. She’s going to grow up in a bunny/cat/horse family so I felt it best to get her used to animals right away. Of course, I always supervise since I don’t want her to injure the buns with a kick or fur pull (a recent thing she tries to do). I trust my bunnies and cats with her. You will have to take into consideration your bunnie’s personality and judge how early you want to put them together.

I agree with AndHenry and LPT. We didn’t have pets when my son was born, but the advice we got from other parents was to keep the household as you normally would — watch tv, let the phone ring, run the vac, etc. The bunny will get used to the new normal noises and smells and he will be a normal part of the baby’s world, and hopefully all of you will get to sleep at the same time!
