I’ve had Mosley for over a year now..and I got her spayed at 6 months old. She has learned to pee in her litter box BUT it seems no matter what I do, she poops EVERYWHERE! I will pick up her poop and put it in her litter box and she will still run around and poop everywhere else. I’ll pick her up and set her in her litter box when she poops and she just jumps out and poops. It’s gross and when friends are over they complain on how gross it is that she just poops everywhere. It’s very embarrassing. I will clean it all up and I still find poops randomly throughout the house. When she is being held, she poops on people. When she is running around free, she poops all over the floor and couch. I have several litter boxes out and around where she likes to pee, but she will only jump in them to pee. Being that she is spayed I really thought the pooping everywhere issue would be gone.

I’ve had it with the poops everywhere…help!! I can’t even have her out very often anymore

PS-Just as of recently, she has started going over right next to her litter box and peeing. I’ll scoot it over, and she still goes right next to it and pees. What is going on?

Peeing: Have you cleaned the place outside her litterbox with white vinegar/water? Is her litterbox emptied and refilled with fresh litter often? Have you recently changed brands of litter? Have you tried wiping up the pee with a paper towel and putting it in the litterbox?

Pooping: First, you may need to reduce the area where she free roams until she gets the litterbox idea. She may be pooping everywhere to mark her territory. Make sure to put some of the poops in the litterbox to help identify the litterbox as the place to “go”. Let the bunny see you do this!

A couple of things you do need to understand . . . While piles of poop are bunny pooping, random single poops are normally marking and “one just fell out” poops. There’s really nothing you can do about the ones that just “fall out”, they just happen. I will find a few of those whenever my lops have been out playing, and one or the other will shoot one out at the start of a bunny 500. Normal bunny poops are not like dog and cat poop. Bunny poop are mostly undigested hay — it sounds gross, but break one open and you’ll see. I know it’s not the most pleasant thing to see, especially for non-bunny people who think bunny poop is like dog poop! Bunny cecals (the dark smelly ones that look like a blackberry) should really not be seen since bunnies eat those for nutritional purposes as they come out. If you see those, it may be time to adjust bunny’s diet a little because it may be too rich.

Has she always been free roam? Or did you just recently increase the size of her area?

I just recently increased the size of her area, not on purpose. She figured out how to go down the stairs for the first time and now she won’t stay upstairs. She would rather sit downstairs in the basement and poop everywhere in the dark by herself. So, I put up a gate and she squeezed through the bars. She stays in her two story cage when she isn’t out roaming and she poops everywhere in there too. Even when she had a small space to roam in upstairs she still pooped everywhere. Like I said, I have tried moving the litter box, I’ve tried picking up her poops and putting them into the litter box with her watching, I’ve also tried picking her up and putting her in the litter box when she poops. I just don’t know what else to do . She is losing out because she doesn’t get as much time out because of this poopy issue…and I hate to decrease her free roam time.

I used to have a bunny that, when I cleaned his litter box, I had to keep a dixie cup of wet litter aside to put in the freshly changed box, or he was no longer housebroken…for days, weeks…it was a mess. Might help with the urine at least. I just wonder what is making her mad/ feeling like she has to constantly mark her normal home as HERS. I would go insane with that. I understand not wanting to limit her free roam time, but at the same time, well, I know I wouldn’t be able to deal with that all over the place either, so don’t beat yourself up over that. If it hadn’t been going on so long, I’d wonder what had changed and gotten so troublesome for her, but I doubt you’re changing things that often for that long. Hard to know what to think.
