I have had rabbits for a long time, and over this time I have developed an allergy to the hay.  Turns out the only hay I am not allergic to is alfalfa, which won’t work since all of my rabbits are adults.  I have used the hay cakes in the past, but it became so expensive that I tried switching to loose again.  This went well for a while, but my allergies have gotten so bad that I break out into hives and have asthma issues whenever the hay comes out.  My husband has this problem too.  I called my local feed store to see if they had timothy hay cakes in bulk, but they don’t, and they can’t (won’t?) special order them in bulk for me.

So, does anyone know how I can order hay cakes for cheap?  I have found decent prices around the internet, but it still costs 4 times as much than loose does, and with 4 rabbits, it adds up quick.

Have you tried talking with any rescues about ordering for you or calling the companies direct? Have you tried different hays (orchard grass hay?

What are hay cakes? Are they those cubes you can get in 50 pound bags at feed stores for horses?

JackRabbit, I had not thought to ask a rescue if they could order some. I know a few that I will have to contact. I contacted the company, and they said to call a local pet store to special order it for me, but the store said that they could not do that. And pretty much all hay but alfalfa gives us issues.

Megabunny, I tried with the feed store, but they will only sell alfalfa, which is weird because my mother in law has horses, and she said she saw timothy cubes at the feed store, but she is also 2000 miles away from us.

I will holler at a few rescues to see what they say, and if that doesn’t work then maybe my mother in law can work some magic for us.

              Thank you for your help!

Ohhh. Yeah, that does sound familiar. I think, when I was in NY, there were cubes that were something other than alfalfa, but I don’t know exactly what, and I’m not sure how big the pkgs were. I can’t imagine paying to ship those. Yikes! I went to a Countrymax store, but I don’t know how widespread they are. In short, I’m no help. Sorry

Are there any other pet stores near you that you could ask? Might be difficult as they stand to make money from it. Our local reptile store were kind enough to order in a suitably sized hamster cage, so you might have luck somewhere other than the feed store.

Good news! I contacted a rabbit rescue and they are going to help us with the hay cakes! Even with shipping we were able to get the cakes for the same price per pound as the loose stuff. Yay!

Paradigm, I just found out about another pet store today, so I will keep them in mind for next time we order.

Thank you all for your help!
