Oxbow claims their Natural Science tablets is an alternative to Papaya Plus but it doesn’t have the ingredients to break down gunk causing hair to clump together to form a hairball.

I found Holland and Barrett sells Bromelain and Papaya separately.

Bromelain is 500mg 60 tablets twice the price of Papaya, and contains 600 gelatine digestive units per gram of bromelain. Papaya comes in 100 tablets each 3 tablets have 45mg papain, 6mg protease, 6mg alpha amylase, 3mg papaya fruit.

My rabbit’s willing to eat both but shows more enthusiam eating the papaya tablet. I tried both. Bromelain tasted like dry powder/flour. Papaya was slightly sweet.

Is there a better product, like higher dosage but cheaper price out there?

There’s quite a bit of controversy about whether or not the papaya tablets do any good. The current thinking is that they really don’t do anything and that plenty of hay and hydration are the answer to preventing fur blockages but that the papaya tablets are ok as a treat. For a while, it was also recommended that cat hairball remedy (goopy stuff in a tube), but the current thinking on that is that it can coat the fur block and keep water from penetrating it, breaking it out, and not letting it pass (in bunnies).

You can buy OTC papaya enzyme tablets at Walmart, health food stores, etc for humans and give them to bunnies, but make sure to look for low sugar content, no fake sweeteners, and not a bunch of additives. I give one a day to each of my bunnies as a treat and rely on brushing, lots of hay and water, when it comes to my bunnies’ ingesting fur.
