I’m freaking out! I cleaned Gunther’s litter box and gave him new hay at around 12:30/12:45 before my class, I came home at around 6:15 and he hadn’t touched any of it and there were no poops in the litter! I gave him a treat and he happily ate it and my roommate has been keeping me posted on whether he’s eating and apparently he is eating his hay but still there are no poops in his litter box! I don’t get off of work until 4am and the earliest I can get him to a vet is tomorrow morning at around 9am! I’m so scared that something terrible might happen before I could get him to a vet! He hasn’t had any of those small dehydrated GI stasis warning poops, his poops have been pretty regular throughout. I did notice something strange, however, there was a pile of regular poop that he had torn up, I suppose, not sure why he would do that. He always has fresh hay and water! At all times! I feed him only a small tablespoon of pellets in the morning and the rest of his diet is hay! What could be causing him to eat but not poop?!?!

Are the any other symptoms? Does he act like he’s uncomfortable at all? Gas is always a possibility.

On the other hand, some bunnies will hold it in and poop a lot at once. If this isn’t normal for him, then it would be concerning. If he’s still eating his hay though, then I wouldn’t panic just yet. If you can get him to the vet in the morning, even if it’s just to make sure he’s okay, then you might want to go ahead and do that.

No he’s being completely normal, running around, being affectionate, at least he was last time I saw him prior to going to work.

That’s very scary. Hoping you come home to a poop storm, but if not, get him in. But you obviously already know that.

A tad unrelated, but you could start giving him some veggies and herbs as well.

Megabunny: I was beyond scared but luckily came home to a healthy and happy bunny with a litter box full of poops! ??????? Very relieved!!

Jack Rabbit: I give Gunther veggies as well, he isn’t very fond of herbs, though I throw some into his salad just to see if he’ll change his mind, kale is his absolute favorite veggie!

Oh thank goodness. Now I can sleep, knowing there is another litter box full of poop. Nothing better, is there??? Ha ha That’s really good news, seriously. Seems like this is such a bad time for shedding, I fear it’s easier for them to get stasis right now. Good Guntherbunny!!

Tell me about it! Gunther is molting like it’s nobody’s business! Luckily he’s almost done and is great with grooming anyhow so if I have to brush him it isn’t an awfully traumatic experience. This GI stasis anxiety, however, is a different story all together.

Jack Rabbit: I actually have a question about veggies, I’m always worried about giving Gunther too much and messing with with his stomach, he’s about 3-3.5 lbs last I checked, how many leaves of kale, for instance, or pieces of parsley, are appropriate to give without possibly causing him to have irregular stool

I’m probably the worst one to ask because I gear everything around my individual bunnies’ needs.

My two girls are a bit sensitive to foods high in calcium so I limit those foods and try to stick with ones that have a diuretic effect. Kieko gets no kale, Marlee gets a few bites occasionally. Moshi has no calcium issues but has a sensitive tummy. He loves kale but still only gets a few bites when I buy it. Parsley is high in oxilates (flat parsley less than curly) and Moshi can tolerate a little so all three of mine may get two or three leaf clusters depending on the size. The base of their salad is green leaf lettuce, with red leaf mixed in. They may also get a little dandelion greens, basil, mint, or dill. Kieko occasionally also gets thyme or marjorum, and romaine lettuce. To keep all tummies happy, I have to stick with mostly green and red leaf with the other things added sparingly.

I think the rule of thumb is 2 cups of salad per 6 lbs of bunny, so 1 cup for a three lb bunny. I believe you could vary that based on how well your bunny handles greens. I’ve also read that the salad should be the size of the bunny’s head, but that doesn’t work for us — Kieko can handle a salad 4 times the size of her small head, but Moshi must have less than the size of his big smooshy face or there will be mushy poop smeared everywhere!

Thanks for the input! Your bunnies are adorable, by the way!
