I have had my bun for two months now, and she’s so difficult to get her to go into her cage. Late at night, she knows she has to go back in, so I can’t get near her to pick her up. I tricked her into going in once with a raisin, but it never worked again. Now, I clean her cage right before bed, fill her water, hay and pellet bowl, and then leave the top off. She hops in, starts munching, and I put the top back on the cage. Simple, but…. this rabbit is possibly smarter than me. I’m sure it’ll work for another two or three days at most. Anyone wan to share their techniques?

Get her a large cage or an xpen. Particulary with xpens, some bunnies seem to feel less confined when there’s no “roof”.

Is she eating pellets all day?

Stop serving dinner until after ‘bed time’-simply withhold dinner (whether dinner is veggies or pellets) and serve them in her cage at bedtime. She’ll learn to go to her cage when you get her dinner ready and she’ll be waiting in there after a short time; Now this onlyworks if she can get into and out of her cage herself.

If that’s not the case-can it be? Can you arrange her habitat so she can enter and exit? Most rabbits don’t like being held-so that can make it doubly punishing-she loses her freedom and has to be picked up.

If you can’t adjust it and she must be picked up, withhold dinner, but when it’s bed time, give her a signal (word, whistle-whatever) catch her with treats and feed her dinner in her cage. Make it predictable, routine and as pleasant as possible-and she’ll cooperate I’m sure!
