        Hey,

My rabbit has grown significantly in the past few weeks (she is in the growing age!) so at frist I thought nothing of it, but the absence of fur seems to be getting more pronounced. She does scratch the area a lot as well with her hind legs and then chews on them for a few seconds. The skin looks normal pink.

Mites? Is it treatable at home? I just want to avoid forcing her to travel to a vet if it’s possible. I would of course still buy medicine at the vet etc.

Hmm, could be shedding with her adult coat coming in (how old is she?) or it could be something like mites as you suggested. Can you see any new fur growing in?

If you are unsure, it is always a good idea to have a vet take a look. Home treatment would be putting some Revolution on her to see if it helps.

She’s about 4 months old. No new fur, just thinning. It does look like the classic beginnings of fur mites as far as I could tell now that I’ve researched it… Looked at it again, I’m not sure. There is fur there, just much less than at other places.

Let me know if you figure it out. My Gus has gone through this, though it was accompanied with mild sores like he was scratching at something. The vet tried to find flea dirt on him every time I brought him in with no luck. Then it finally filled in (months later), started up again and seems to have stopped. He does have an ear infection we’ve been battling, but not sure if it’s related and it seems to have calmed down again and never spread. Sorry. That probably does nothing to help, but just thought I’d chime in. Never treated him for it

Vet gave me an anti-mites liquid to administer locally once a month. I have 3 doses. It’s just so weird, I can’t imagine how 0,1ml liquid smeared on the area would help (what about the rest of her body?). Area seemed extremely devoid of fur today after treatment, but it may have been due to her neck being wet.

If the meds are like other flea/mite treatments, the med is absorbed through the skin and “distributed” system-wide. I don’t think the vet is just treating that area — the area where your bunny has fur loss is the normal spot to put flea/mite meds because they can’t lick that spot.

Lola has this very thing right now and has no mites. No sores present just bald patches on her neck.

Day 2: After a single treatment, I don’t see her scratching the area anymore!

Wow!!That’s great! You might want to call the vet and let them know. Everyone needs a pat on the back once in awhile

Good to hear she’s not scratching anymore! My first bunny had a bald patch in that same location for maybe 3 or 4 years. Never grew fur, never developed mites, although I never saw her scratch that area either, she was just bald on the back of her neck.

Meketaten – Some of that can be genetic too. You will see it in angoras and Jersey woolies.
