I lost my bunny Kimo of 11 years yesterday. He had been battling problems with paralysis in one of his hind legs and front legs, and last week, had a bout of GI stasis. He had always been such a fighter, battling through all his illnesses and coming out on top. Last weekend, I had taken him to the vet because he was ill, and she told me he wouldn’t survive through the weekend and even if he did, his quality of life would be poor, so she recommended euthanasia. I came home crying, but decided in the end that Kimo would let me know when it was time to go. He somehow managed to survive through my birthday weekend, and a few more days. And every night last week, I would let him eat his hay and drink water (he couldn’t move very much on his own, and cuddle him to sleep for a few hours and then give him fluids. Thursday morning, I did the same, and he was getting better, so I thought that he would be alright. I had a long day at work that day, so I cuddled him a little longer in bed and left for work, making sure he had enough hay and water. I stopped by a storeand pick up bananas on the way home for Kimo and Tika for a treat. When I came home around 8:30 that night, he had left me and his bonded bunny friend, Tika. He must have passed sometime in the afternoon, but I think he passed away peacefully; he was sleeping in the litterbox. I held him so tight and cried all night. I let Tika say her goodbyes, and she couldn’t stop grooming him. This morning, I took Kimo to his last vet visit and had him cremated. My heart is so heavy, but I can’t stop thinking that Kimo is somewhere in bunny heaven munching on all his favorite treats: bananas, grapes, carrots, and apples, and it makes me smile knowing that he can now hop and binky forever.

I am so sorry. He was clearly deeply loved. It is always hard to loose a bunny, even when they have had a long happy life like Kimo. Sending lots of hugs and bunny kisses to you and Tika.

I’m sorry for your loss. It seems like no matter how long we have with our loved non-human children, it isn’t long enough. What’s with the bout of GI stasis right now? It seems like this silent killer is really active right now, judging by the posts of the poor losses we’ve had recently.

Thank you everyone for your kind words. It was tough the first two weeks, just realizing how much a part of my life Kimo was involved in. There were no more Kimo belly rubs for good luck when I had meetings, and no little furry balls (though I still have the other furry hairball) following me around for food. And it never really does get easier even though you try to prepare yourself for that day that your little furry bunny friend doesn’t come running to you when you get home in the evenings. It has gotten better lately though, and I’ve let myself think about adopting more bunnies in the future.

To JPetrucci84, Before Kimo had passed away, I had asked them to take a blood sample to test for e. cuniculi, because I had a feeling he had it (he was saved from a rabbit meat farm crowded with many other bunnies so he could have gotten it when he was younger; he started showing symptoms, ie. really bad leg paralysis, sudden worsening of cataracts, a slight head tilt when he was really sick early in the week, worsening incontinence), and the test came back very high positive for e. cuniculi. Though Kimo had passed before the test came back, I’m not sure if treating it would have helped at that point. I’m also not sure if e.c. was the cause for it or that his blood titer was just really high for e.c. because I had refused the post-mortem exam for Kimo (though in hindsight, it would have been very helpful for other bunnies who may be positive for e. c.). I wish that more vets would take into account e.c. when determining causes for neurological impairments in bunnies.

I hope this helps for anyone who has bunnies who are having paralysis with no known causes other than possibly arthritis.

                        Thank you everyone!
