I have picked up flakes of horse quality grass hay from a local stable and I was wondering if you could tell me what type of hay it is. I’m positive it is not timothy as it has a very fine grassy pieces and no seed pod things or hard stemmy parts. It’s very good smelling, and dry but has brown pieces but it doesn’t look bad. I am thinking it is orchard grass with a few clover bits in it (I saw 2 flowers when I sifted through all of the hay). I fed a little to Kraken and he absolutely loved it! I was wondering if it would be ok to feed as his primary hay type as it was super cheap (6 dollars for a 50 lbs bale). Here is a picture of it:

Any grass hay is fine for a primary. I can’t say for sure what type it is but it may be Timothy even though there are no seed things. My horse eats hay that doesn’t have very many of those. It looks very similar to what my horse eats. You’re lucky, my buns are too fussy to eat her hay that I could get for free. They would rather I spend a fortune at the pet store.

It doesn’t look orchard grass, as that is usually very green and “grassy” … it could be brome, or timothy. Any horse quality grass hay is fine though, as long as it’s not alfalfa (which that doesn’t look like).

That looks kinda like what I buy, I buy it by the bale locally.
It should be fine, as long as it’s grass hay.

It’s too thin to be oat hay. I would say that it’s probably brome or timothy too.

Without a doubt it is a timothy blend. You’ll most likely find some mustard stalks in there, I think I see one. They’re okay for rabbits in small quantities so it shouldn’t do any harm.

Its most likely large animal hay (equine) which is okay to use and its good for the teeth AND it is usually a lot fresher than the stuff you find at the pet store. That being said, because it is tilled and harvested at mass, and bailed all in the same swoop, there isn’t a process where anyone goes through the product as to what is bunny safe and what is not. I would recommend mixing this stuff with some of the store bought stuff, or swap between the two.

My guys like my horses hay more than their own, but there is stuff that is a little too high in oxalic acid (same reason you shouldn’t give your rabbit too much parsley)

I’m sure I see Timothy in there. But any grass hay is just fine -and horse quality hay is the way to go!
