My rabbit is a little over a year old. Just recently whenever we travel, she will lower her left ear, looking like a Lops ear. She will leave her ear like that until a day or a day and a half after travel. This weekend we went home and she has left her ear like that for an entire weekend. She doesn’t seem to be in pain and she just seems comfy with her ear down, but this was brought on by travel, so that makes me worried. I got her from the humane society and they said she wasn’t a lop mix, but I guess it could be possible. Is there a serious concern with her one ear being down? What can I do? Why could travel bring on the weirdness with her ear?

Do you travel with her a lot? I’m wondering if the timing is just a coincidence.

What kind of travel is it?

A year is a little late to start lopping, but it’s possible she’s a late bloomer so to speak. She could just have a wee bit of lop in her making her helicopter slightly.

Hi, thank you for your response. We travel to my parents and back via car once or twice a month. That is about an hour and a half drive. She is in a pet carrier (which she hates) in the back seat. That is about all our travel.

My guy is definitely NOT a lop, but holds his ears at half mast all the time, and one of them totally lops. Actually, whether coincidence or not, he ended up having an infection in that ear that we are still battling. He never showed any signs of illness or discomfort…that I could tell, anyway. I think helicopter ears are adorable…as long as it’s not an infection, though I don’t know why it would only happen with travel. Sorry. I’m a bit paranoid about rabbits and their ears now

It still hasn’t perked back up, the hair where her ear normal is is very messy. I tried feeling her ears, the loppy one gave no resistance to being raised, but would slowly sink back down. In fact, she was moving it at all. I’m worried she broke something.

Have you been back to the vet ? To me it sounds like an infection or similar in the ear. The last infection may not have been fully resolved. I would be getting it checked out.

It could also be something with the middle ear which would explain why the travelling aggravates it.

Is there any way I could check her ear out myself before going to the vet? I can’t afford to go to the vet until next week unless it is extremely serious (like, I wouldn’t be able to eat if I took her, which, I will, if she needs it) but is there a way I can see if her ear is infected?

Look for any discharge or inflammation, excessive head shaking or tending to tilt a bit to the side. If it’s been ongoing and you don’t see discharge, inflammation or tilting then next week should be fine.

I doubt the ear broke, just from what I’ve seen with my rabbit. I swear he’s going to be totally lopped before all this is done. I think it’s more a weak cartilage thing. But anyway, please don’t RUSH to the vet, though if you can swing it you should probably go because if it is an infection, it can spread. But my rabbit NEVER showed ANY symptoms or discomfort, and the vet said he’d had it going on for a LONG time and his ear drum was GONE. He also said many rabbits don’t come in until they’ve developed a head tilt and it’s really spread. SO it sounds like you’ve caught this early…if it even is an infection. Could the area of his ear be messed up because he’s scratching it??
Rabbits almost always have infections in the inner ear, so you won’t see anything just by looking. I feel so badly for people struggling financially to keep up with rabbit vet bills. Who would know that they could get you in such a financial situation?? It’s one reason I won’t get more than one at a time. It got even more expensive than my dog!
