I recently built a 2 floor hutch for my rabbit, I moved him out there today bc the weather wasn’t too cold. I have set up a food and water bowl, hay, and everything he needs, but he doesn’t know how to use the ramp and won’t come out of his hiding place! He’s on the top floor and won’t go downstairs. My rabbit is not food motivated and doesnt like being picked up… I don’t know if hes eaten or drank, and he hasn’t pooped either. Idk if this is because he’s new to the hutch…? So, after 3 hours out there, I decided it was time to bring him indoors, I opened the door and he hid and when I reached for him to put him in his carrier ( I didnt touch him) he lunged and bit me! I am very worried and am not sure if he wants to go inside or not, but I can’t leave him out there if he’s not going to eat or drink! What should o do?? Also why did he bite me? Is he scared?

do you think you could put a little food and water where he is at? he may need more time to become more accustomed to his new area. Being outside he may have heard or seen something that scared him, sounds like he is just frighted poor bugger

He bit you because he was scared. If a bunny has always been an indoor bunny, suddenly being left outside by himself, in a strange house, with strange smells and noises, can be frightening and very stressful (hence not eating, drinking, pooping). Bunnies may lunge and bite when being territorial, but it doesn’t sound like that was the case since he hasn’t claimed the hutch or explored it.

IMO, you should bring him back inside to familiar surroundings and encourage him to eat and drink. Give him his favorite veggies (extra wet) to get his gut moving and give him some hydration, and punt the outdoor hutch.

How would I get him indoors if he won’t let me pick him up?

is it possible to get the carrier in the hutch area near his hiding spot? could put his favorite food inside of it and let him get in on his own

im just trying to think of other options before forcing him in by the scruff of his neck has to happen

Put on thick gloves and put him in his carrier. You could also toss a towel over him and pick him up that way (bunnies won’t usually react if their eyes are covered) and put him in the carrier. Just remember that he’s scared and not being mean, and may lunge and/or box you as well. He may hold a little grudge after he’s back in his usual surroundings but should soften up when you give him his favorite veggies.
