Hey guys! I was thinking about my little bun bun and wondered if she gets cold at night? I also recently heard from someone that bun buns can’t produce their own heat. And this worried me a teeny bit. Just wanna make sure my bunny is nice and cozy!

They don’t mind it cool but in the winter they like a snuggle rug so YES I am assuming they get cold. All of mine are indoors and their favourite thing on a cold day is to get under their fleece blankets. They do tolerate cold much better than heat and will hug their ice bottles on a hot day. I wouldn’t leave a bun outside in snowy or wet weather as that can lead to pneumonia.

They can tolerate cold better than heat, but do best in temps down to 60 degrees F. Any cooler than that is really too cold for them to be comfortable. If you’re comfortable in your house, they should be as well. Most houses don’t go below 60 or over 80 bc that becomes uncomfortable for all the inhabitants.

Their mammals and warm blooded-so they do produce heat!
As long as your rabbit is indoors they should be fine. They do overheat so summer is more of a worry than a bit of a chill. But you do not want them outside or in a drafty area as that can stress their immune system. If you are comfortably warm without a coat, they should be fine.

KK – Yes, I should say. Otherwise they wouldn’t be mammals. Although some mammals do enter torpor to conserve energy. They will allow their body temperature will drop and their metabolism to slow. Bunnies do not do this though.

I agree with everyone else. Bunnies can tolerate cold better than heat, but that doesn’t mean they don’t get cold. Especially if they are not eating enough calories to maintain their body temperature properly. As long as they are indoors and you are comfortable, then they should be fine. Fleece blankets are generally safe and can be used as long as your bunny doesn’t chew it.

Humans have a much much lower tolerance to cold than rabbits. Many rabbits live in unheated hutches all winter long through out the US.
