I had one of my does spayed on Monday (two days ago). She’s a Holland Lop, not quite 3 pounds. She sort of nibbles on some veggies and some hay, but she’s not eating anywhere she normally does. She’s not really pooping either. I’ve only seen a few pellets since she came home and they’re much smaller and darker in color than normal. She doesn’t really seem to be drinking so I’ve added a water bowl (to no avail) and been wetting down the veggies I offer her. I’ve tried making a grain mush and hand feeding her through a syringe. She keeps lunging, growling, and she’s managed to bite me a few times. So that’s not really going that well. I’ve tried contacting the surgeon and he is on holiday. Outwardly, she seems more or less fine, but I know that can be deceiving. It seems that the more veggies I manage to get her to eat, the more pellets I see, but it’s still next to nothing. I’m really worried about her. I’m not really sure what else to do since the surgeon is away until Monday. His office did say that they would be back on Friday however. I was hoping that someone would have any suggestions or advice for me. It would be really appreciated!

If she is eating veg at least, that is good. It’s quite normal for poop to be small and dark a few days after surgery. She probably won’t be interested in pellets that much yet. It seems to be veg, hay then pellets. You might have to wrap her in a towel to get the pellet mash into her mouth, however at this stage if she is eating something and producing poop then her gut is moving. Try tickling her nose and under her chin with the hay, she may get annoyed but if she grabs the hay she is likely to chew on t and decide to munch a bit more.
