Zeus is suddenly peeing outside his litter box. He’s pooping in his box, and I think peeing sometimes in the box, but I keep finding puddles in his cage. I cleaned out his whole cage really well, tried switching litter boxes, cleaned his box less often AND more often.. No luck.

Any ideas? I’m going to call the vet tomorrow when the office opens. His pee is normal color, not thick, not cloudy, and acting totally normal.

          How old is Zeus now?

He’s a big boy, could he be getting a little arthritic? Although I’m not sure if that explains just pee outside the box since you say he still poops in there okay. Hmmm…….

That’s what I was thinking as well, LBJ. He’s on a joint supplement, but his litterbox did have rather high sides to it. I got him a new box, and trimmed the side down to make a little “easy entry” part to it. So far, so good… fingers crossed!

I also played musical cages… him and Hera’s cages were right next to each other, only 1/4 inch or so between them. I put the guinea pig’s cage in between them instead, to see if it was a territorial thing. I guess I’ll find out tonight when I get home and see if he left any puddles or not!

So the puddles continued, I brought him into the vet for a once-over. The vet palpated his bladder, and said it didn’t feel hard and he wasn’t acting painful with it being palpated. They then took an xray and confirmed no obstructions in his bladder or his little urinary tract. They kept him at the vet’s for a few hours to try to get a urine sample from him, but they thought he was too stressed to urinate.

So they sent him home with this special litter and a shallow litterbox to get a sample from him. The litter was like tiny plastic pellets, cool stuff. I was able to get a sample from him (he peed/pooed within an hour or so of being home, go figure!). I dropped it off at the vet this morning – she’s supposed to call me once she has a chance to analyze it. Fingers crossed it comes back normal!

Vet called – urine test was totally normal. So Zeus has no health problems causing the accidents. The vet guesses it’s something behavioral – now to try to figure out what that is!

Well that’s good to hear! Hmm, well, I suppose it could be a pee/poop war he has going on with Hera. Would he be horrified if you swapped his box for hers?

He’s VERY particular about his cage and his things – I switched their mats once, and there was pee/poo everywhere, from both bunnies.

I’m sure it’s just dumb luck, but he hasn’t had an accident since coming home from the vet – I just picture him overhearing my conversation with the vet in the exam room and him thinking “Geez lady, if you’re going to bring me to the vet over a few puddles I’ll quit doing it!”.  LOL.
