I’m waiting to get in some Benebac. Gus gets diarrhea on occasion. One blast, tracked around his pen (another reason he can’t be free roaming), then he’s fine. Now, he’s been on Baytril forever, but the first time this happened was before all this ear trouble. Once in Aug. and 3-4 times since. I should probably get a sample checked but in the meantime, can rabbits just be on probiotics all the time? Looks like you’re supposed to get them down to twice a week after the initial start. I’ll give hm a day off the Baytril, but he’s fine again. So weird. I can’t connect it to anything he’s eaten.

Is it actual diarrhea or mushy poop? No change in kind of veggies, quantity of veggies, or quantity of any certain veggie or pellets? I just ask because Moshi has a sensitive tummy and one bite of romaine OR even a bite too much of salad in general can set him off. He’s odd though — cut his salad back and give him some oat hay tops and he’s good to go.

Hope you can figure it out. We can’t have Gus’ tummy upset!

It’s a blast of watery grossness. I panicked the first two times. Now I’ve learned its short lived. I don’t know about those probiotics. Can I just try them as long as I want or are you only supposed to give them when needed?

Probiotics can be taken by humans and dogs “forever” and there is a kind for rabbits, in pellet-form, Pro-Fibre by Protexin, that can be given all the time, as a supplement. It’s not sold in the USA though but you probably have other types that are just as good. It’s from the UK and can be bought here at vet’s clinics.

You often need to take probiotics for a prolonged time for them to take effect. It’s about establishing a sound, working gut microbiota (the bacteria in our guts do LOTS of work, and in rabbits’ and dogs’ guts too), and that can be hard and/or take a long time in people and animals whose immune-systems are compromized for some reason. If Gus is on Baytril “forever” I suspect probiotics “forever” is a great idea. As you know Baytril kills bacteria, and it’s not picky, it kills the good bacteria as well as the bad ones. So if you keep replenishing the gut with good bacteria, chances are his tummy will do a lot better. People on antibiotics are recommended to take extra-high doses of probiotics. I recently did a MOOC on Gut Microbiota that was extremely interesting. It was from the University of Boulder, Colorado.

Medirabbit says you can give probiotics, they may or may not work but they won’t cause any ill effects.

Thanks Bam. Gus has weeks of Baytril left so I’d love to find the pelleted form. I’m going to check into that. Thanks again

Do you think the Baytril is what has been causing the bouts of diarrhea since August?

The first bout was before we moved and he wasn’t on anything at that time. It’s frustrating because he’s calming down and can be out for longer periods of time w/o being watched every single second, but that would be a mess if it happened and he tracked it all over the carpeting. But I can’t keep him in his pen for something that’s happened, like 3x in 4 months. I almost never give him celery leaves. Sounds pretty far fetched, but that’s the only thing that was different. I should get a sample checked just to be sure, I guess, but it’s somethinglike $30 and it just adds insult to injury with all the other expenses…and no job yet grumble grumble! I was so close, too!

Hope you find a job soon. When you’re used to working, the novelty of free time wears off fairly quickly.

If its not the Baytril, and you don’t want to do a poop check right now, about all you can do is add or remove items and see if anything seems to coincide with the diarrhea. I don’t think probiotics could hurt. We figured out Moshi’s “triggers” bu trial and error. With him, it can take a couple of days for the effect to show up (ex. too much salad a couple evenings in a row and the next morning he’ll have mushy poop and excess cecals and then it takes a day of no salad or small green leaf only salad plus oat hay tops before returning to normal).

Thanks for that. I’m an impatient person and I simply want to know WHY and NOW not later. About the time I find a job I’ll probably complain I don’t have enough time in my day…never happy

Well, at least you know *who* has the poop issue. With a pair of bonded buns, I spent months trying to figure out who pooped! I kept asking them ….!

Ha ha ha ha Yes, one bunny is turning out to be enough for me, much as I think I’d like more.
