It am really worried. My rabbit has been asleep in the little ‘tunnel’ made by the couch and the wall next to the radiator for a few hours and he just woke up as I heard THUMP THUMP THUMP! I never heard him thump in his whole life. He was so freaked out and I tried to comfort him but he acted like he didn’t even know who we were. He wouldn’t take food for a while (even his favourites). He was acting like we were strangers (me and my dad). He had wide eyes and kept thumping. He was scared to come towards me or my dad and he crept really slow in juddery movements. If I did one tiny move he ran away back to the ‘tunnel’. Eventually I bribed him to the kitchen with a bit of food to his house. He seemed to not recognise his house, even hesitating before going inside and acting like he wasn’t sure looking at all his things like he’d never seen them before. I left him there and he’s lying down in his house now.

What’s going on? Could he have amnesia (I know it sounds silly)? Should I take him to the vet?

        I’m so worried.

He hasn’t been right since his neuter around 6 weeks ago.

Not sure what’s going on, but maybe he had a bad dream? I’ve seen cats freak out a bit after waking up from twitchy-upsetting sleep.. sometimes having to sneak around every corner or piece of furniture for upwards of an hour… so maybe the same thing can happen with bunnies?

When you say he hasn’t been right since his neuter, what exactly seems to be off?

Well firstly he seems to have become obsessed with ripping up carpet whereas before neuter he never did that.

He never jumps in the couch anymore and he used to millions of times each day.

He seems to sleep for 95% of the day.

He seems to have less personality, I’m not sure how to explain. He isn’t as much wanting to be with me and my dad lounging around he’d rather go into a corner on his own.

He also nips my dads ankles now.

As far as the ripping carpet goes, I noticed this with Pete too; but found that if I dropped a towel over the spot he would just turn the towel into a nest and there would be no more carpet ripping as long as he had his towel. Not sure if that would help with your bun or not. Maybe some new chew toys or things he’s allowed to shred?

His lounging could also have to do with him getting to be more comfortable and independent maybe? My bun follows me more closely when he’s nervous or when boredom kicks in. If he’s already entertained himself, chances are he’ll find a spot where no one will bother him and just lounge and people-watch.

Do you think maybe he’s been up more at night? That may account for his sleepiness..?

He’s going through puberty and like most teenagers, they forget everything they know :~) J/K about that but it is just puberty and he’s growing up.

I agree, could have been a bad dream.

How long ago was he neutered?

Looks like 6 was since his neuter. What do you mean he hasn’t been right? They do calm down a bit, like they don’t hump your foot and such. Is he just a bit less “amorous” or something more?

Bunnies can get spooked by things that we humans don’t always see or hear and it can take them a while to get over it.

Teenage hormones do wacky things to bunnies, and they can seem like they have split personalities while their hormones calm down after a spay/neuter.

@ cottontail : He has loads of toys and particularly loves shredding cardboard castles. I will try the blanket think but I’m not sure he’s keen as I often sit with a blanket now it’s cold and he just gives it a sniff and walks away.

He may be up more at night. What could I do to prevent this, or try make sleeping at night? He’s’so always been a lounger and loves to stretch out but this used to be in the open in front of everyone usually and he would do it for about half and hour then mess around for half an hour then relax again, but now it’s hour and hours at a time.

@megabunny : he seems to be less active and he is just different. It’s hard to explain. It’s not always bad things like he is like most very good with litter training now. Also if I shout “hey what are you doing?” Or “don’t be naughty” when he goes to his favourite spots to chew carpet/walls he jumps round and actually listens to me sometimes (probably 70% of time). If he is for example upstairs and I want him out of a room I kind of have to herd him out so I will stand behind him and nudge him forward in the direction I want him to go and he kind of jumps in the air goes a few steps then looks back at me waiting for another nudge. Is he playing when he jumps(sometimes really high and far) or scared or something else? (Btw you should know he does angry binkies as well as happy ones).

The main change I don’t like is he’s a bit more of a loner whereas before he craved attention.

Well, yes, I’m afraid their personalities do change after being neutered. I think it’s typically the part where they calm down. They aren’t slaves to their raging hormones, which is why they crave extra attention before being neutered. You’ll both adjust and work it out. I know I get disappointed when the boys stop doing figure 8’s around my feet after being neutered. Gus still does that to a point, but my last one stopped altogether. Lots of people have buns that will learn the sound of a treat bag and circle your feet for that. It’s just different because they’re looking for food, not hanky panky. And I’m not sure about jumping after being nudged with a foot. They are a constant mystery…unless you’re a rabbit whisperer like Jack Rabbit

Megabunny — I’m not the whisperer, son’s ex-girlfriend is the one! But, did you notice that Nicolle is at 70%!!!!! I think you’re just giving up on the talks too quickly! If you miss figure 8’s around your feet, come to my house at bunny dinner time — you’ll get the figure 8’s plus a few 500’s and you’ll get to see Moshi go airborne trying to get his bowl out of my hand quicker. I’m just trying to keep from falling — it’s like wearing moving slippers sometimes!

Ha ha. Well Gus does some figure 8’s but not as passionately as b4. And I call you the Whisperer because of those talks you have!

I can’t rank myself up there, if I could be a whisperer I would be able to pick my bunnies up, they would snuggle with me, etc. Oh how I wish!

We had a bopping war today. He bopped my legs so I bopped him so he bopped me and I booped him again. Went on like this for a while…Then he dug me! Was funny!

Glad to hear things seem to be better now I know how scary it can be when they act strangely and you don’t know how to interpret their behaviour. Glad he’s getting back to his usual self
