My bun Zac is 4 years old.. I wanted to find him a mate, so I adopted a girl bun from shelter last Sunday. I planned to separate them for 2 weeks before introduce them to each other.  Girl bun is in a cage, Zac is always free run at home.

Here is what happened last night.. I was cleaning the cage and prepare dinner for both of them, so girl bun’s cage door was left open, then Zac went inside.. they started fighting and going in a circle, I was screaming and split them right away.. less than 1 min.. but still lots of fur on the floor.. all Zac’s fur..

After they both cool down.. I found a piece of fur with pink coloured skin on it… I was so scared.. but there’s no blood.. I called Zac’s vet and they told me if there’s no bleeding it’s not emergency. They give Zac an appointment this Saturday morning.

I’m sure Zac is in pain. He still eating and acting normal, but I heard he grind his teeth today.. I feel so bad.. I don’t know if I still want to bond them anymore..

Fights can be very scary, especially if you have never witnessed one before. That is a very big chunk of fur but looking at the wound it is superficial (shallow) and not bleeding, so that is good. It will still take a while to heal.
The tooth grinding you are hearing, is he hunched up and huddled when he is doing it or is it when your are stroking him ?
Check him all over to make sure there aren’t any other bites, there could well be some bruising, unfortunately he might not indicate where any sore spots are.
If possible move the girl some where away from him, another part of the house if possible, so they can both settle down. It was a bit early for them to get together particularly with one being king of the castle and the other having very restricted territory that was invaded.
In a few weeks when you are ready to try properly make sure you start in a nice neutral zone where neither bun is at an advantage over the other, in between make a point of swapping toys, bedding and litter trays back and forth so they get use to the smell in an unthreatening way.
A vet visit Saturday will be good as the vet will be able to see how the wound is healing and if there is any likelyhood of abcessing (it’s a nice clean wound though so I think Zac will be OK)

Just a thought, are they both desexed ? It makes it a whole lot easier if there aren’t hormones involved.

                      I’m glad he’s doing better!

On bonding, the fight doesn’t mean they can’t be bonded or even that bonding will be especially hard for them. It happened because two unbonded rabbits were in a territorial area together. Don’t let it scare you away from the idea of bonding them completely.

My buns had two epic fights with chunks of fur and skin ripped out. They both have scars, Hugh has a tiny strip of white fur on his back where one injury was.
But now they are bonded and happy together!

Incredibly scary when it happens, and hard to imagine that they will ever be friends when it seems they want to kill each other. Persevere!

It is hard to believe after 2 epic fights my two buns become best friends now..
