hello fellow bunny owners. I am Kandy and just today got two new bunnies. (well 2 of my kids got bunnies.) they were a BIG surprise to our family and we didnt know they were going to be given to our kids. Their names are Thunder and Storm. (I don’t have pictures yet. I wanted to give them a little time to settle in) they are babies and very cute. (white with black spots). They have expanded our large family. We have 5 kids, 3 kitties, a chinchilla and now 2 bunnies. busy home. I did have one question. One of the ones we got has poop stuck to his back legs. I would like to wash it off of him. What can I do to safely get it off of the bunny? I know bunnies systems are EXTREMLY sensitive. I will post pictures at a later date.

just in case you didnt know this, you don’t want to give a bunny a bath or a shower. that said, I think the best way to do it is a damp cloth to the area to clean and dry. If that is not enough, you can create what is a “butt bath” where you place the bun in a shallow warm water and wash off the area and dry thoroughly after. I have no such experience on this but maybe someone else can chime in with more details.

I’ve used unscented baby wipes (with the vet’s ok — like the unscented Target brand) followed by a damp washcloth and towel drying. Sometimes gently rubbing the poop piece between the wipe or washcloth parts will soften and loosen the poop. Be careful not to pull on the fur because bunny skin is thin and delicate and can tear.

Welcome, btw! We do love pictures so please post away!

Not sure why the poop was stuck on the bunny to begin with, but its always a good idea to have a rabbit savvy vet do a checkup with new bunnies. Make sure to take a fresh poop sample — its not uncommon for young bunnies to have coccidia which can start as sticky poop (can be stinky) and progress to dangerous diarrhea if not treated.

Bunnies (all ages) also produce a second kind of poop (cecals) which looks like very dark tiny clusters of grapes or like a blackberry as opposed to normal cocoa puff looking bunny poop. Normal bunny poop doesn’t stink, but cecals reek! You usually won’t see bunny cecals because they eat them right from their rear ends, but you may occasionally see one now and then. Lots of uneaten cecals can indicate a too rich diet or other problem.

Take a read through the Bunny Info section (through the menu button at the top of the page) for lots of helpful bunny info!
