my brand new pound bunny has a fat neck

does this mean she’s overweight or is it ok?

by “fat neck” i mean she has a big roll about the diameter (not size) of her head.. of fat in her neck

Um… I may be wrong but do you mean a dewlap ? It’s something all female bunnies get and the occasional male. It’s like a huge double chin.

Although I know it’s not the same body part at all, I always looked at the dewlap as being kind of like the bunny-bosom. It’s her natural curves that catch the boy-bunny’s attention. It reminds me of Thumper’s girlfriend in Bambi.

The dewlap develops as female bunnies reach sexual maturity. When they are preparing to give birth, they will pick fur from this area to build their nest. You usually only see large dewlaps in unspayed females, or females who were spayed after finishing sexual maturity (after about a year old).

              Is your girl spayed already?

My 1 year old bun who was unspayed and overweight had one. After spaying and getting her down to a healthy weight, it went away.

I don’t know how old she is .. but she looks a little overweight..

i’m still bribing her with treats because she’s super shy so i’ll work on her weight later

.. i’m convinced you’re all right about the dewlap though, she’s a voluptuous, purdy girl

Are you guys sure? My friend has a spayed female, and I’m pretty sure she still has her dewlap. Lily doesn’t, but I don’t think she ever did.

Totally dependent on the bun. In general though, the dewlap will reduce in size at least a little.

I thought the dewlap develops after sexual maturity and I’d spayed prior to getting the hormones it would not develop. also if she has babies then it gets larger. I could be wrong

                              That’s exactly right, flopsie!

The dewlap starts to develop at sexual maturity. Spaying at that point will halt it’s development and cause it to shrink back down. Once the dewlap is fully developed (usually between 1-2 years depending on the bun), it is there to stay, even post-spay, but might shrink a little.

If you see a rabbit with a dewlap, chances are she’s either unspayed, or was spayed a little later in life. My girl, for example, was spayed at about 7 months and she has no discernible dewlap.
