Hi all. I ended up taking my Oliver to the emergency vet this afternoon due to severe lethargy. The doctor who is a highly recommended rabbit vet ran some kidney tests on him and said it looked like he was in the beginning stages of renal failure. She said it was important that he be taken of his metacam and have his kidney’s flushed. So he is currently there on an IV for the next 24 hours.

I went to visit him before we left and he was in a metal box with only a towel to lay on. He looked so sad.

Please keep him in your thoughts tonight.

Thank you all. Just brought him back home. All he wants to do is sit behind a chair. So now we’re just waiting and hoping he returns to his normal, energetic self!

                          More vibes for Oliver!

The vet is a noisy scary place, mine are always just exhausted after being there for any length of time-hoping he perks up after a good snooze!
What did your vet say about further treatment or expectations?

His actual vet doesn’t think it was a kidney problem that made him lethargic. She thinks he has some neurological problem that is progressing and something that still needs to be addressed.
The emergency vet said he should be totally back to normal and will need fluid IVs to treat his kidney problems at home.

He was lethargic for an entire day after returning from the vet. He perked up a bit in the evening. It’s the next day around 2pm and he’s just napping now–so I have to wait until this evening to see if he’s back to normal or not.
If he is back to normal, then we will test his blood again in one week and if he is indeed in renal failure not caused by the metacam, then we’ll begin with some at-home IVs.
If he isn’t back to normal, then my vet thinks something else is wrong. We don’t really know what else to do at this point…so I’m really really hoping he’s his normal self tonight.

                            *fingers crossed!!!*

The vet called me tonight–Olive is negative for E.Cuniculi!
Also, although he’s still resting more than normal, he’s quite alert and active tonight. The resting could be due to switching him off his metacam to gabapentin or to this whole ordeal, so I am not too concerned about that.

So it looks like either the metacam was causing kidney problems or he’s in early kidney failure. Either way, definitely manageable!

Does anyone have experience with gabapentin for treating arthritis? Is it a heavy-duty drug? Can it negatively effect rabbits?
I’m considering eliminating his pain killers altogether and seeing how he does. He doesn’t have very advanced arthritis.
