So one of my rabbits had an accidental litter last Monday. All of the babies died so I put back into her normal cage. Ever since she has been very mean. Before she got pregnant she was the sweetest out of my bunnies. Now she bites hard, growls, and doesn’t like being held. Before she got pregnant she would sit on my lap and take a nap. She gets plenty of floor time and has a good diet. What happened to her?

Bunnies grieve just like people do but in their own ways. Perhaps she is very sad about losing her litter or doesn’t understand where they went and is angry with whoever took them. It’s a very sad thing. Perhaps in time she will get over it. But when bunnies give birth their hormones lead them to nursing and caring for their young. With no litter, her hormones are still raging with nothing to do about it, so she’s grumpy. Getting her spayed in time will help. But I hope all goes well with her!

I’m sorry for the loss of the babies. I agree that this sounds like a hormone issue. Her system is all of of whack right now because of the surge in hormones and the fact that she should be nursing babies and there are none.

Have you spoken with your vet yet? What is your timeline for getting her spayed?
