        Hi!

I’m looking into getting a fuzzy holland lop (A holland lop who turned out, accidentally, to be a fuzzy).  I’m wondering if anyone knows about how they differ from Americal Fuzzy lops.  Is their fur similar?  I’m also wondering if there fur is a nightmare, like I’ve read?  Also curious why breeders try not to get fuzzies – I know they aren’t showable, but they’re cute and make great pets.

        Thanks!

The way I understood it, Hollands can have wooly genes which were mixed in there because they were trying to achieve a certain fur length. The result is the occasional fuzzy individual. The fur should be similar to the American Fuzzy Lop, which has guard hairs. If they don’t have guard hairs, then yes, grooming can be a nightmare. I have a Jersey Wooly and his fur has guard hairs. When he sheds (and he will blow his coat all at once), the loose fur actually slides down the guard hairs and I brush it off so it doesn’t mat.

Interesting, thanks! Does anyone know about the Holland fuzzy lop fur type? I’ve read that an American fuzzy lop is like a holland lop with wool, but then what is the difference between a AFL and a fuzzy holland lop?

The American fuzzy lop was developed as a breed through fuzzy Hollands.

Thanks! So then how is the AFL different from a fuzzy holland?

I don’t think there is a whole lot of difference between the two. When the wool gene was introduced into Hollands, they would occasionally produce wooly individuals which do not meet “show standards” for the breed. It sounds like someone just decided to create to new breed so they could show fuzzy Hollands. Then they couldn’t call them Hollands anymore, so they called them American Fuzzy Lops.

So what is it when a holland has slightly longer super thick fur but no wool? Is that just a normal holland?

Maybe its part wooly??? I don’t know. Leopold has silky smooth, glossy fur. It’s about an inch in length, which I read was what people look for. I like the teddy bear-ish look of the M&Ms though. They look so cuddly!

The M&Ms are definitely not silky, but I think they have guard hairs? They have “shiny” hairs mixed in with the thick fluffy fur. The fur on their backs is shorter than on their butts and underneath, but its all so thick. Marlee especially is a little poof ball — she has the really short stocky holland legs and with all of her think fur, she almost looks like she has fur curtains on her lower sides. Moshi isn’t like that though.
